1. When Jim and Toni Beaton started their small hydroponic farm in the rolling hills of
Leelanau County, they didn’t intend to become a part of a movement with their
extended-season tomatoes and lettuce. But that’s exactly what happened.
Hydroponic produce is now a mainstay in the Michigan agricultural system
and in demand among institutions and restaurants.
‘Hydroponics’ is an umbrella term for a variety of methods of cultivating
plants in a soilless environment using nutrients in solution. Although
TLC Hydroponics have designed tried and true production systems,
they are persistent innovators, committed to conducting research and
development in the exciting and growing field of hydroponics.
From March through November, TLC Hydroponics utilizes three of its four
state-of-the-art greenhouses exclusively for bibb lettuce, which is sold in
different pack sizes to suit a variety of customer needs. Offering both clamshell
and bulk pack options, TLC harvests lettuce with its roots intact, ensuring a long
window of peak freshness for customers. The other greenhouse is dedicated to a mix of
beefsteak, heirloom, and cherry tomatoes, along with specialty items.
TLC Hydroponics regularly brings new hydroponic products to market – diversifying from its
flagship lettuces and tomatoes to include herbs, cucumbers, peppers and other popular annuals.
