SUGGESTED COURSE OF ACTION

 Option Two

“Lay off 2 of WHPK’s 10 employees and
eliminate the Meals on Wheels (MoW)
program, which delivers 1 meal to 200
homebound residents, 5 days a week.”
RATIONALE OF OUR DECISION
 Creates the least number of victims.

 Consistent with WHPK’s mission business
 statement.

 Consistent with the Government’s advocacy for
 healthier nutrition among kids and elders.

Impact of our decision
Impacts on Community

              5 Days/Week

       $                $315,00             Contiguously

     Affected People:
     Option #1:250      Option #2: 200+ 2     Option
     #3: 700
Impacts on Community

                 Community would be
                  protesting WHPK.

                 Clarify that #2 will free
                  up the funds needed
                  to continue serving
                  the majority of
                  community.
Impacts on Community

                                    The
            Call-to-Action      Community’s
                                   Taking
                                Responsibility

   “Our hopes are that the
                                  Make the community
   MoW program will be
                                  partly responsible for
   sustainable through
                                  helping those in need.
   volunteer efforts and that
                                  Thus, they’ll be less
   the 200 homebound
                                  inclined to “blame”
   residents will also be
                                  WHPK.
   served.”
Impacts on Reputation
• The fired two employees might Create
  negative comments/Advocate
  protesting against WHPK/;

• Public would argue to lower director’s
  salary;

• Media would bring up the renovation
  issues.
Why the other two options are less desirable
Option #1               Option #3

 Affects more people  It is not consistent with
 than #2 does.            the organization’s
                          business purpose;

                         Jeopardizes the
                          audiences’ health;

                         Could bring unwanted
                          attention from
                          government and the
                          Media.
Addressing the Board’s Top 3
Concerns
Donor Relations Risk:

• Adjustment of MoW is
  securing the survival of
  the organization;

• Laying off employees
  demonstrates that WHPK
  considers its at-need
  audience as a priority.
Charges of Mishandling Finances
   Renovations were necessary so that the
   organization could meet the consumer’s
   necessities and the challenges of the
   community.

   Highlighting how we sacrificed the
   internal audience to ensure serving our
   primary audiences.
Demonstrations of Community Protest
 WHPK should allow  WHPK is seeking all
 the dissent,               possible volunteer

 communication and          MoW.

 for improvements.  WHPK would never

Suggested Statement:

Our organization was faced with the tough
decision to discontinue the Meals of Wheels
program, which resulted in the elimination of two
internal positions. We have the full support of our
employees in this decision and we will preserve
our loyalty to the community we serve, providing
them with nutritious meals. We humbly ask those
who support our cause to rise up to the
challenge, volunteer and help us recover MoW.
Thank You

Editor's Notes

  1. This is the general graphic of our potter box. In this graphic, each box contains the key points, which will be elaborated in next few minutes.
  2. Let’s start with facts.As a non profit organization, which has been existing for 25 years, WHPK is suffering a significant downfall of the general budget. Meanwhile, it’s projected donations are inadequate to compensate for the financial shortage. Currently, there are 10 people who are paid. The other working forces are all volunteers. Based on the situation, WHPK has to save at least 365 thousands in operating cost, otherwise, it might go bankrupt. This is a must-made decision. The point is where is such a big amount coming from, while WHPK only has three choices.Also, last year, WHPK did renovations, which was criticized by the media as excessive. And the media also predicted there would be some financial troubles later.
  3. After understanding the current situations, let’s move on to the values.The values can be seen from three perspectives.As a public kitchen, it is WHPK’s duty to make best efforts to provide healthy food to widest range of need people. Even thought it’s suffering the financial troubles, it should limit the negative impacts on the communityAs an organization, while helping others, it has to ensure its survival first. And for the further considerations, it should control the damaging to its reputation. As the basic values of this PR Campaign, we should be honest and transparent to the public, and we should make sure our donors would not lose confidence to us
  4. We use Mill’s Principle of Utility as our ethical principle, which guides us to seek the greatest happiness for the greatest number of ppl.
  5. Our first loyalty is to serve healthy food to the needed public. If we failed to do so, we gonna fail our mission.Also we cannot ignore the donor’s relations. We will be respect their opinions and communicate with them positively.
  6. Laying off two employees and eliminating MoW will result in 200 homebound residents that won’t be able to receive their meals five days per week. However, this is still the most preferable recommendation because it affects the least number of people as a result of the necessary cutbacks. Option 1 affects 250 people and option 3 affects 700people. By laying off two employees and eliminating the MoW program, WHPK will save enough money to still deliver quality food to 500 number of individuals, where as option 1 affects 250 people and option 3 affects 700 people
  7. Undoubtedly, option 2 will still result in strong advocates protesting against WHPK’s treatment of its employees. However, the organization must publicly clarify that laying off employees and cutting back the MoW program frees up the funds needed to continue servicing the majority of the community. It will help them serve the maximum number possible of people in need of its services, which is their main priority.
  8. Unwanted attention from the Media :WHPK must make a “call-to-action” for more volunteers to come on board. “Our hopes are that the MoW program will be sustainable through volunteer efforts and that the 200 homebound residents will also still be served”. The organization should strategically make the community partly responsible for helping those in need. By making them responsible, they will be less inclined to “blame” WHPK when things go wrong.
  9. Laying off those employees and cutting back the Meals-on-Wheels program, frees up the funds needed to continue servicing the community.
