So what happens when an Academy Awards ceremony ends 20 minutes earlier
than scheduled? Put the pressure on host Jerry Lewis to fill up that time! At the
31st Academy Awards ceremony, Lewis encouraged Lionel Newman’s orchestra
to perform “There’s No Business Like Show Business” several times. This
followed by letting his former comedy partner, Dean Martin, help himself to
another Oscar trophy, roasting a competing show’s ratings, attempting to
conduct the orchestra, and even trying to play the trumpet. A short film finally
put an end to the misery. But hey, what would you have done?

If anyone asks you what the longest standing ovation given at an Oscar
ceremony was, the answer is 12 minutes! Yes, that’s right! Silent film star
Charlie Chaplin returned to the U.S. after a decade to receive an honorary
Oscar at the 44th Academy Awards. Because those in the audience
recognized a screen legend when they saw them, they stood up and clapped
for him for 12 straight minutes. Their hands and feet must have been pretty
sore after!

Winning Best Actor is meant to be a privilege to those who win, but it apparently wasn’t
for Marlon Brando. He won Best Actor at the 45th Academy Awards for his role in The
Godfather. Instead of refusing in person, he sent Native American actress Sacheen
Littlefeather to decline it for him. She brushed the award aside and gave a brief speech
written by Brando of the degradation of Native Americans onscreen. He referenced his
support of the American Indian Movement as well as the ongoing situation at Wounded
Knee, a Native American site that was under siege by U.S. military forces. So, would you
have refused this award yourself or sent someone else to do it for you?

Introducing the most awkward moment in Oscar history-
The Streaker! At the 46th Academy Awards, American
photographer Robert Opel pretended to be a journalist to
gain access to the stage. Once he did, Opel ran past host
David Niven from behind as he was introducing Elizabeth
Taylor and ran across the stage naked holding a peace
hand gesture. Luckily, the audience and host had a sense
of humor!

Another cringeworthy moment! Allan Carr, the producer of the hit movie musical
Grease, decided to go all out for the opening of the Oscars by having none other
than…Snow White…hosting the ensemble. She sang with a Minnie Mouse pitched
voice “I Only Have Eyes for You” with dancers wearing giant hats depicting the
Cocoanut Grove nightclub. Rob Lowe, who is neither a singer nor a dancer, joined
in on the number singing with Snow White Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary.” This fiasco
led to Disney suing the Academy for using Snow White and Carr’s career was
over. In the future for all, leave Snow White alone!

What would your reaction be for winning the biggest achievement your movie can
get? Similar to Roberto Benigni’s? At the 71st Academy Awards, Benigni won Best
Foreign Language Film for his movie Life is Beautiful. He was so happy and
overjoyed to have won that he climbed over and stood on the backs of the seats
in front of him as well as hopping along towards the stage! Well hey, if you’re
proud to win, no harm in showing it!

Nothing like hearing your name being mispronounced when asked to sing your
award-winning song onstage. While announcing Idena Menzel to sing her song
from the hit animated film Frozen at the 86th Academy Awards, John Travolta
called her “the wicked-ly talented, the one and only, Adele Dazeem.” What’s funny
is that he says it with such confidence too! This mess-up became a popular
meme and she got her revenge a year later at the next ceremony by calling him
Glom Gazingo!

There’s only one way that a fashion icon can get her revenge for not getting recognized at
the Academy Awards- by wearing an outfit that’s not Oscar friendly. Cher was mad at the
58th Academy Awards for not being nominated for her role in Mask. This led to her
presenting the Best Supporting Actor award wearing a tartantula-like two-piece outfit to
show that she doesn’t agree with the Academy system. That is a wicked dress, though!

This moment made people’s heads turn during Angelina Jolie’s speech when she
won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Girl, Interrupted and said “I am so in
love with my brother right now!” We can normally just see that as an exaggeration
except for the fact that they were spotted kissing each other on the lips during
the Red Carpet event. Jolie denied the rumors in that they both were close with
each other after their parent’s divorce. Is that still reason enough to kiss your own
brother like that?

We all had the same reaction as Jack Nicholson when he announced that Crash
won Best Picture at the 78th Academy Awards. Whoa is right! This movie is
considered the worst Best Picture winner considering everyone thought
Brokeback Mountain would take home the gold. The Academy, at the time, was
hesitant to have a movie about a gay love story win movie of the year. Luckily, the
Academy made up for that when it gave Moonlight the Best Picture award it
deserved eleven years later.

People tend to do unexpected things when they win major awards whether it is
turning them down, jumping on chairs, or making out with announcers. When
Halle Berry announced Adrien Brody as the winner for Best Actor for his
performance in The Pianist at the 75th Academy Awards, he galloped on stage,
grabbed her, and engaged in a steamy liplock with her. Berry did not seem to
mind. If this kiss occurred during the #MeToo movement, more turned heads and
crunched up faces would happen.

Being Kanye Wested is being interrupted mid speech such as when Taylor Swift was unable to
finish her speech at the MTV Music Awards when Kanye West interrupted and said Beyonce
had the best album of all time. Well, it’s apparently still a thing now. When Roger Ross Williams
won Best Documentary Short for Music for Prudence at the 82nd Academy Awards, his
speech was immediately interrupted by the producer of the film, Elinor Burkett. She wanted to
take this moment as her own as she sued the production when Williams wanted to focus on
one subject for the film while Burkett wanted the film to be about the band they were focusing
on. She definitely seized the moment!

Of course, we cannot forget about this moment! While everyone was expecting La
La Land to win Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards, Faye Dunway
announced the wrong winner as she read the wrong envelope. She and Warren
Beatty thought that because they were handed a duplicate envelope that
announced Emma Stone for Best Actress for La La Land, they announced La La
Land in their confusion. The real winner of the night was Moonlight. Accountants,
you only had one job!
