Lullaby
By
Carlos Luís Ramalhão
(from an original idea by Hasan Dogan)
INT. BEDROOM, HOSPITAL, DAY
A depressing room. Uncomfortably silent, as we get closer to
a bed. There’s a window next to it. ÖMER, a young man with
immature eyes and a tired body, lies in there. He’s got no
hair.
His hands, still, palms up. His eyes facing the past.
Introspective.
ÖMER (V.O.)
Trees. They had a golden colour. 59
days ago... They... They...
He struggles with words. With some difficulty, he reaches
for a notebook and a pen. It’s blank. He starts writing.
Despite visible pain.
ÖMER (V.O.)
Autumn has come. A preparation for
Winter. Grey. Rainy.
We look outside through the window. We see it in black and
white. Trees, houses, heavy showers. Ömer sighs, looking at
the landscape.
ÖMER (V.O.)
Trees used to be golden. Now they
look like this. Either black. Or
white. Or grey.
As he speaks, he covers one eye. We see the landscape,
white. He covers the other one. We see it black.
Back to him, lying there. Notebook in his hands. He puts it
aside a bit. Stares at the palms of his hands. They still
look delicate. Young.
ÖMER (V.O.)
When I met him, he looked into the
palm of my hands. He said I had
sixty days there. That dark, wintry
creature took all the dreams I had
kept. In my hands. And replaced
them by sixty days. I told him:
Ömer faces us and mimics the words.
ÖMER
I want to start a new day.
(CONTINUA)
CONTINUA: 2.
ÖMER (V.O.)
He said: “Well, now you’ve met me.”
My life. In death’s hands...
We look outside through the window, once again. We see drops
of rain on the glass and a blurry landscape beyond. He
touches the window with his fingertips.
ÖMER (V.O.)
I kept this hope... This...
Dream... There were some things I
wanted to tell life. All of them
(PAUSE) incomplete.
I used to love that golden
colour...
EXT. STREET, DAY (FLASHBACK)
Omer, dressed in every day clothes, walking towards a phone
booth.
ÖMER (V.O.)
This country... This... I am in a
country I don’t belong to. My
beloved ones. So distant.
He gets in and dials a number. Doesn’t look well. A FEMALE
answers.
FEMALE VOICE (TURKISH)
Hello?
He blinks. We hear his worried breath. He remains silent.
FEMALE VOICE (TURKISH)
Hello? Who is this?
He closes his eyes. Puts the phone down. Covers his face.
Then walks away.
ÖMER (V.O.)
59 days ago... I still kept a silly
hope that the disease would go.
With the rain. But I was in a deep
cage, with no roof. All that was
left for me was to look up.
3.
INT. BEDROOM, HOSPITAL, DAY
We see Ömer from above. He’s looking up. Begging eyes.
ÖMER (V.O.)
I asked God: So many doors... So
many addresses... Why did you
choose mine?
Omer faces the camera again. Mimics the V.O.
ÖMER
All I got was (PAUSE) silence.
He picks his notebook again. Starts writing.
ÖMER (V.O.)
Every day we move closer to the
end. We get used to it. You accept
him as a friend that you never
really get to know well. There’s
always some taboo subject you can’t
argue. Your life map.
Trees began to drop their skin. I
felt cold.
A photo drops from the notebook. A woman.
ÖMER (V.O.)
I always remember my mother. As a
shelter. My close friends. The
woman I loved. As a turtle, I keep
my head inside. My shell. All the
fears in my heart.
NURSE comes in. DOCTOR follows. They talk but we can’t hear
them. Ömer doesn’t move.
ÖMER (V.O.)
When I was a child, I had a
shepherd dog. The sound of him
barking outside woke up me up.
Every day. There was a day I never
forgot. It was cold, snowy. He left
us without saying goodbye. Two days
later, I found his dead body. Next
to the river. We carried his body
to our house. And buried him under
the tree.
Nurse says something to him. He looks at her and nods.
(CONTINUA)
CONTINUA: 4.
ÖMER (V.O.)
Then, I began thinking about the
reason why he didn’t say goodbye.
I still hear him whisper, in my
childish heart.
Ömer calls the doctor.
ÖMER
Can you get me a... video camera?
Any kind...
The doctor nods and tells something to the nurse who leaves.
Nurse comes back. Gives Ömer a small camera. He points it at
his face.
ÖMER (TRYING TO LOOK RELAXED, SMILING
SOMETIMES)
When you watch this video, you’ll
see me there. with you. You always
asked me. To return home... I have
now decided to go. Remember the
tree? Will you bury me there? And
then, whenever you’re unable to
sleep, in the night. You can go and
visit me. You can sing me to sleep.
I might have trouble falling
asleep, too. You know...
He gives the camera to the doctor, who takes the tape out.
Places it on the table. Then turns to him.
DOCTOR
Take this tablet. It will help you
fall... asleep.
Omer takes it. Nurse gives him water.
DOCTOR
Please, sign this paper.
Omer signs a piece of paper without reading it. Gives it to
the doctor. Doctor and nurse leave. Omer looks at his hands.
Closes his eyes. His notebook on his lap. Open. We see it.
It’s got some drawings of a tree full of leaves.
We look outside, from the window, again. It’s still raining.
