My involvement in the general management and leadership of the company:
Job Position: General manager
Responsibility:
- Turn around an existing, under-performing and under-utilised establishment, ensuring its long
term viability.
- Compliance (Local environmental and premises regulation, food health and general health and
safety)
Activities:
- Management of a diverse team (different cultural backgrounds, several languages, etc.)
- Promote and share best practice in hospitality and catering standards
- Establish and implement systems for monitoring and delivering activities (daily log, issues
register, risk register, lessons learned)
- Health and safety: ensure staff receive appropriate food safety training, health and safety in the
workplace training
- Recruitment and retention of staff
- Event management
- Innovative income generation
- Community engagement
Key Issues:
- Overcome outdated mindsets from the local community and stakeholders by influencing a
positive paradigm shift and gaining local support.
- Building had been poorly maintained and required refurbishment and full health and safety
checks.
- Overcoming seasonal trend and achieving regular ongoing customers support all year round.
- Remote location, required innovative efforts to encourage travel to destination
Outcome/learning’s:
- Successful transition from an underperforming, forgotten establishment to a locally-supported
and treasured gem along the South coast of England.
