HOW OPEN SOURCE CAN HELP IN
DEVELOPMENT OF CARIBBEAN
CONTENT
Multimedia Essay
CARIBBEAN CONTENT
The availability of digital technologies has driven new ways
of thinking, new types of behaviours and new expectations
from audiences but as a region we don’t create, package
professionally and distribute enough original content to
feed the needs of the many online distributors that are
popping up now. In fact our biggest content creating
industry is music and even so we stretching it.
WHY IS CARIBBEAN CONTENT IMPORTANT?
 Local content production can create significant
opportunities and positively impact both social and
economic development. As the volume of local content
increases, the Internet becomes more relevant and has a
greater impact on improving the lives of local
communities.
WHY CARIBBEAN CONTENT IS IMPORTANT?
 While people in the Caribbean consume a
significant amount of content produced outside its
borders, they also want to interact with their news,
their music, their images, their accents and even
their issues in cyberspace. By producing our own
content on this, our culture and historical
background we give ourselves an identity. Leaving
our own digital footprint for the region giving us the
ability to present ourselves as people.
WHAT IS OPEN SOURCE?
Open Source refers to something that can be
modified and shared because it’s design is
publicly accessible.
According to www.opensource.com , While it
originated in the context of computer software
development, today the term "open source"
designates a set of values. Open source
projects, products, or initiatives are those that
embrace and celebrate open exchange,
collaborative participation, rapid prototyping,
transparency, meritocracy, and community
development.
OPEN SOURCE
OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE
This software’s source code is available for
modification and enhancement by anyone.
SOURCE CODE
"Source code" is the code computer programmers
use to change how a piece of software (program or
application) works. Programmers who have access to
a computer program's source code can improve that
program by adding features to it or fixing parts that
don't always work correctly.
WHY PEOPLE PREFER OPEN SOURCE?
 Many people prefer open source software because they have
more control over that kind of software. They can examine the
code to make sure it's not doing anything they don't want it to
do, and they can change parts of it they don't like. Users who
aren't programmers also benefit from open source software,
because they can use this software for any purpose they
wish—not merely the way someone else thinks they should.
 Others like open source software because it helps them
become better programmers. Because open source code is
publicly accessible, students can learn to make better
software by studying what others have written. They can also
share their work with others, inviting comment and critique.
WHY DO PEOPLE PREFER OPEN SOURCE?
 Some people prefer open source software because they
consider it more secure and stable than proprietary software.
Because anyone can view and modify open source software,
someone might spot and correct errors or omissions that a
program's original authors might have missed. And because
so many programmers can work on a piece of open source
software without asking for permission from original authors,
open source software is generally fixed, updated, and
upgraded quickly.
 Many users prefer open source software to proprietary
software for important, long-term projects. Because the source
code for open source software is distributed publicly, users
that rely on software for critical tasks can be sure their tools
won't disappear or fall into disrepair if their original creators
stop working on them.
OPEN SOURCE AND CARIBBEAN CONTENT
Open Source can help develop Caribbean Content by:
 Making it easier for us to produce, share and collaborate with
other content creators.
 Allowing us to better our work, grow as creators and even
develop our skills using the softwares and broadening our
talents.
 These softwares will build a platform for Caribbean creators.
Shining a light on their talents, encouraging them to continue
and better their craft.
 Creating content using these software gives us people other
opportunities for employment. This will create revenue-
boosting the economy. More money will then go into the field,
providing us the funding to acquire more resources for content
creating.
