Public colleges are funded in part by the states where they are located and thus offer tuition breaks
and higher acceptance rates to in-state students. If you are interested in a public institution outside
your home state, find out if they offer reciprocal agreements that allow out-of-state students to pay
tuition at in-state rates.
Private colleges do not consider residency when setting fees, and they often have more flexible
admission practices. They may be quicker than public institutions to overlook low test scores or
GPA when a student demonstrates other positive attributes.
Private colleges may appear at first to be more costly than public ones, but a good thing to
remember is that the more expensive a college is, the more money they may have to give away.
