2. International Volunteers Day
• CANSA celebrates International Volunteers Day
on 5 December to thank volunteers and
raise awareness about their significant
contribution to society
• We appreciate all our volunteers who are the cornerstone of all
CANSA projects carried out in communities and workplaces
• Over 7 000 trained volunteers are our foot soldiers in the fight
against cancer and they carry out invaluable work
• Without our volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to provide care and
support to those affected by cancer
• We thank and honour you this International
Volunteers Day. We salute you!
3. Online Volunteer Training
• CANSA is very excited to launch our new
online Volunteer Training programme
• This free training course in Health Promotion
and Patient Care, consists of everything that is required to
become a proud CANSA volunteer. Modules include:
• background and information regarding CANSA
• health education and living a balanced lifestyle
• cancer (staging, common types, treatment)
• managing side effects of treatment
• dietary and nutritional needs of cancer patients
• the emotional impact of a diagnosis
4. Who are #Volunteers?
• Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes,
but they all have these things in common:
willing, caring hearts & hands ready to serve
• They serve by donating time and energy for
the benefit of others in their community, as a social responsibility,
rather than for any financial reward
“Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless,
but because they are priceless!”
-Sherry Anderson
5. CANSA’s Volunteers
● CANSA’s volunteers are valued and appreciated assets,
helping staff at our CANSA Care Centres across the
country, to educate local communities about the
importance of:
○ awareness of the signs of cancer
○ regular cancer screening and
○ living a balanced lifestyle to lower
cancer risk
● They also provide care & support to
cancer patients and loved ones or
assist with administrative / fundraising tasks
6. #AffectedByCancer #GivingBack
● Our volunteers come from
different walks of life and many
have been personally affected
by cancer – either being cancer
survivors themselves or knowing
someone who is
● Others simply seek to help
relieve the cancer burden in
their communities
“As a cancer survivor it’s
a privilege to be a CANSA
volunteer. My own
experience of denial and
later acceptance makes it
possible to understand other
survivors. To be a CANSA
volunteer broadened my
outlook on life.”
Marie Boers,
Villiersdorp
7. “I am a breast cancer survivor for almost
three years. CANSA trained me to be a
volunteer and to do presentations. I now do
awareness campaigns in my home community
of Lesotho. CANSA’s staff assisted me to recruit
more volunteers. They also gave me CD’s to
play at the clinics and hospitals, as well as
written material to give to the community to
learn about cancer. We now also offer
counselling to Basotho patients.
I am very thankful.”
Volunteer Mamahlako Lekhatla
8. CANSA’s Volunteers
CANSA volunteers are carefully
selected, trained and supported
by volunteer co-ordinators
Volunteers can choose to serve
where their strengths lie, and the
relevant training will be provided
by CANSA staff:
● education
● care / support
● advocacy
● administration
● fundraising
“My husband and I visit
cancer patients together. We
offer practical support as well
as spiritual support. We are
very proud CANSA volunteers
and are thankful for all the
support from the CANSA
personnel.”
Mechiel & Maggie Lucas,
West Coast
