3. Spanish Universities
• 80 universities in 236 campus
• Spanish public universities tend to be disperse. An average of 4-5 campus
per university is normal and big ones have more than 15.
• 25 are private (private universities are in expansion)
• Students
• (global) 1.500.000
• (average) 19.000 students / univ.
• Nearly 30% of people between 18-24 are attending universities.

Spanish universities have in common that all of them teach and do research.
Professors are evaluated, but not universities.
Research is basically developed in:
• University departments
• CSIC institutes and some Spanish big research centers
• Autonomous research institutes (more common in Catalonia)
4. Spanish Universities: positions in The Times HE ranking

9. From libraries to CRAI
• CRAI = Resource centers for learning and research
• Influenced by the UK's movement (Follet report, and convergence of
services)
• IT and libraries did not converged
• New libraries are built under this conception
• Libraries centered on users

17. Collections
Spanish libraries are rich in heritage collections
Traditionally, professors have done the selection of new
acquisitions.
• Libraries have a passive role building collections.
We don't have the figures of the reference or the subject
librarian.
• Recently, some libraries introduced the figure of the liaison librarian,
a link between university departments (research) and libraries.
• The students advisor function is not rooted in the library
University teaching methods are mostly based on exams (and
not in essays).
• The ratio between borrowed documents and student is lower than in other
university systems.
Licensing has been done at regional level.
• In the last years, consortia act together to negotiate licenses with big publishers.
18. Negotiations for framework and national licenses
When the economic downturn has been higher, we’ve reached two
important deals With Wiley and Springer
• national frameworks better than national licenses
• conditions are the same for all, but each regional consortia pays separately
• 2012 Wiley, price reduction
• 2013 Springer, they accepted some cancellations and we establish a cross
access at Spanish level
Licensing for specialized publishers are done separately al consortium
level
We participated in SCOAP3 (2014)
Elsevier (2013-15)
• CRUE-Rebiun wanted to establish a national license and get additional money
from the Government
• First attempt in 2013 failed.
– The Government involvement was very low and they didn’t give additional money
• We are trying again this year
• Negotiations began last July

OA and research
• OA and IR
• OA mandates
• Research portal

20. Repositories
• Around 60
• Almost all universities have their own IR
– Recently the IR-CRIS relation has increased
• Dspace (61%) is clearly the predominant technology platform, far ahead of the
others.
There are two main service providers (harvesters/aggregators).
• Hispana, Created by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2006.
– Not only academic information (press, archives, etc.).
• Recolecta, created together by REBIUN and FECYT in 2008.
– Spanish scientific publications.
Spanish Science and Technology law
• Art. 35. “Open-Access Publication”) mandate the creation and development of
repositories and open-access dissemination of publicly-funded research
outcomes.

31. Radical cooperation
25 years working together around ILS
• Catalan university libraries unofficially decided to use the same ILS
(VTLS): 1990-94
• CCUC creation: 1991-95 and 1995-96
• The shared decision to change to a new generation ILS: 2002
• Shared tender (Millennium, SFX & MetaLib): 2005
• Centralized installation of different databases in the same computer,
managed centrally (2007)
We established a 3 years (2012-2014) objectives:
• A unique system, cataloguing once, able to search all the library
resources, flexible to grow, interoperable with other Systems and easy
to build new services upon.
• In order to have that system, we need:
– A unique DDBB
– A single search box for all the library resources
– A more flexible computer architecture
