2. A classical ballet in Russia has a long-lasting
traditions but the history of a contemporary
dance is being written today. The purpose
of our festival is to show the best that
exists in the contemporary choreography
and, primarily, to help young talented
stage creators to take their well-deserved

Contemporary dance festival CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva was founded
in 2013 and has been successfully running in Moscow for the past four
years attracting over 9000 people annually and growing every year.
The Festival takes place in the most renowned Moscow theatres, such
as Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre,
Gogol Centre, Electrotheatre Stanislavsky and the Documentary Film
Centre. In 2016 the Festival expanded its geography and presented
a program not only in Moscow but also in the legendary Mariinsky
Theatre and Angleterre Cinema Lounge in Saint-Petersburg.

The festival is a unique theatrical, educational and social platform. It gives Russian
audience a chance to see the most recent international dance productions
and find out about the latest trends in contemporary choreography. For dance
professionals, the festival is an opportunity to expand their creative abilities
and career horizons. The festival explores all aspects of modern choreography
showcasing both leading and emerging international dance companies.
CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva provides an opportunity for professionals to share
and enrich their dance language, to experience different movements and means
of expressing emotions on stage. The audience gets acquainted with schools
directions of international contemporary dance without having to travel abroad.

The Festival consists of several strands – international showcasing,
Competition for Young Choreographers and an extensive educational
program which includes film screenings, public talks for wider audiences
(ContextSpeaks), workshops for professionals and general public.
6. Context.Diana Vishneva | INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM
The international program showcases cutting edge contemporary dance
productions most of which haven’t been shown in Russia before.
In the past years the Festival presented the productions by Martha Graham
Dance Company, Alonzo King LINES ballet, Béjart Ballet Lausanne,
Suzanne Dellal Dance and Performing Arts Centre, Richard Alston
Dance Company, Introdans, Korzo Producties, Gauthier Dance, NDT II,
Ballet Preljocaj, Ate9 dANCE cOMPANY and NANINELINNING.NL.
Among the most noteworthy performances were the works by such
acclaimed choreographers as Mats Ek, Hans Van Manen, Marco
Goecke, Ohad Naharin, Jiří Kylián, Maurice Béjart, Martha Graham,
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Angelin Preljocaj and Aszure Barton.

The annual competition for young choreographers
is one of the key events of the festival. It provides
an opportunity for the emerging talents from Russia
to present their work to the international jury of high
profile contemporary dance professionals.

9. Context.Diana Vishneva | EDUCATION
The educational program gives additional scope to the festival
by presenting films, panel discussions, public talks and meet-the-
artists (ContextSpeaks), as well as workshops and master classes.
In addition to performances, each dance company holds master-
classes where both professional dancers and the public get acquainted
with the special techniques that the company implements in its work.
The powerful combination of the performances on stage and their
detailed analyses at the master-classes clearly shows how choreographer’s
ideas, his mood and feelings «materialize» in the form of dance.
The CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva educational program reflects
Diana’s vision of dance as a diverse imaginative practice.
10. Context.Diana Vishneva | EDUCATION: ContextSpeaks
The CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva festival launched a series of meet-the-
artist sessions «ContextSpeaks» in the format of public talks with prominent
choreographers and dancers about art, career and life.
The guest of the first ContextSpeaks was the legendary choreographer
Mats Ek who also presented his sensational dance film Place, specially
created for Mikhail Baryshnikov and Anna Laguna.
ContextSpeaks: «Conversation with choreographer. Mats Ek and Samuel
Wuersten» took place on November 15th
, 2016, in Gogol Centre.

In 2016 the CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva educational program
was designed both for the industry professionals and
general public. It was curated by the leading professionals
in photography, dance journalism and makeup art.

DIANA VISHNEVA
Founder and Artistic Director
of CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva
Diana Vishneva is one of most famous and celebrated dancers
in Russia and the world. She is a prima ballerina at the Mariinsky
Theatre, principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre, and
is now the founder and mastermind for the festival CONTEXT.
Diana Vishneva. Originally trained as a classical ballet dancer,
Vishneva is interested in pushing the boundaries of the Russian
ballet tradition. The Festival is a part of her plan to support
and nurture young choreographers and introduce audiences
in Russia to the diverse contemporary dance practice.
Diana Vishneva’s work has brought her numerous awards and prizes,
among them Gold Medal and Grand-Prix at the International Ballet
Competition in Lausanne in 1994, the title of People’s Artist of Russia,
the State Prize of Russia, the Divine prize, the Benois de la Danse
award, a Golden Sofit, the Spirit of Dance prize in the category
in the category «Queen of Dance», the prize as best dancer
of Europe, six Golden Masks and the Ballerina of the Decade prize.
In 2010 she established the Diana Vishneva Foundation,
a cultural charity that works in Russia, the United States and
Japan to increase access to ballet for all social classes, promote
it as a modern art form, establish new dance projects and
provide financial support to young and retired performers.

SAMUEL WUERSTEN
International Curator
of CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva
Samuel Wuersten enjoys a multifaceted life in dance. Dancer, teacher,
choreographer, currently artistic and executive director of the Holland
Dance Festival, Co-director of Codarts Rotterdam, University
of the Arts, founding artistic director of the BA Contemporary Dance
at Zurich University of the Arts, former co-director of the Steps Festival
in Switzerland. Jury member and advisor to various international
arts events and organizations. Knight in the Dutch order of Orange-
Nassau and Chevalier in the French Order of Arts and Letters.

SOFIA KAPKOVA
CEO and Curator

of CONTEXT. Diana Vishneva
Sofia is a well-known cultural practitioner and the producer
of documentary television projects, including the two-part film
«Get over cancer». She worked as the Chief editor of News
section on Channel One (Russia) and was a producer of numerous
acclaimed television programs. Sofia graduated from Moscow
State University, specializing in «Television». She currently
works as the CEO of the Documentary Film Centre
and Diana Vishneva Culture Centre in Moscow.

ANASTASIA YATSENKO
Curator of the Competition
for Young Choreographers
In 1991, upon completing her studies at the Moscow College
of Choreography (today the Moscow Academy of Choreography), she
joined the Bolshoi theatre where she later became a leading soloist.
Anastasia’s repertoire includes such classical ballets as Cinderella,
Giselle, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, Anyuta, participation in Alexei
Ratmansky’s and George Balanchine’s neoclassical works. In 2013,
Anastasia became a teacher-repetiteur at the Bolshoi Theatre.
Anastasia worked as an assistant choreographer with Christopher
Wheeldon,William Forsythe, Nacho Duato, Mauro Bigonzetti,Wayne
McGregor, Alexei Ratmansky, the George Balanchine Foundation,
Mats Ek, Jean-Christophe Maillot, and Carolyn Carlson.
