8. COVID Then & Now
◉ COVID Then
– An estimated 113, 708 US children have lost a primary caregiver due to
COVID (1.5/1000 children), as of 4/2021
– Proportionately higher losses in Black and Latinx children
– Steep decline in pediatric well visits – missing immunizations,
developmental and behavioral surveillance
– 77% of School-Based Health Centers closed at least temporarily
– Increased reporting of neglect and emotional abuse
◉ COVID Now
– More children are infected with COVID
– More hospitalized, but not necessarily sicker
– Increased severity of pre-existing
behavioral health problems
– Academic impact is clear: 3rd school year

to potentially traumatic events
◉Current challenges facing children and families
– Identification
– Barriers to accessing care
– Limited protective factors
10
11. Practical Tips
◉ Fear of talking openly about the potentially traumatic event
– Caregivers
– Children
– Providers
◉ Talking with families about
potentially traumatic events
and their impact
– Consider your role, reason why
family is seeing you, context, age of
child, how long ago the PTE occurred
◉ Psychoeducation can help families feel less alone and can guide the
decision to seek treatment
