Some of the world's most popular foods were invented by accident. Here's a background story of our favorite foods that came into being due to unexpected situations, by improvisation or mistake.

2. Potato Chips – Crisps
In 1853, George Crum, a chef at the Moon’s Lake House in Saratoga Springs in
New York by chance invented potato chips. A diner was complaining that his
“French Fries” were too thick and soggy and kept sending them back to the
kitchen. Crum was frustrated but sliced the potatoes razor thin, fried them crispy
and added extra salt. To his amazement, the customer liked them, and thus potato
chips were born.

3. Chocolate Chip Cookies – Famous Classic American Cookies
Ruth Wakefield, the owner of Toll House Inn, a restaurant in Whitman,
Massachusetts was making cookies when she realized that the regular baker's
chocolate that was usually used had run out. She decided to use broken pieces of
Nestlé’s semi-sweet chocolate assuming that the chocolate would melt and
spread into the batter. However, the chips didn't spread, and thus the famous
chocolate chip cookies came into being in 1930.

4. Popsicle - Frozen Drink on a Stick
In 1905, soda pop was the most popular drink in the United States. 11-year old
Frank W. Epperson of Oakland, California tried to make soda pop in his house. He
accidentally left a concoction of powdered soda and water with a mixing stick in a
glass on his porch during a cold night. Next morning he found his mixture frozen
with the stick still in it. He initially called it the Epsicle and later patented in 1923
his unplanned creation as "a handled, frozen confection or ice lollipop."

5. Ice-Cream Cones – Waffle Cones
An ice-cream stall at the 1904 World Fair in St. Louis, Missouri ran out of plates to
serve their ice creams. The shop owner, Arnold Fornachou, noticed that the
neighboring stall sold wafer-thin waffles. The stall owner Ernest A. Hamwi came
to his rescue by rolling the waffles into cones and gave them to Fornachou.
Fornachou topped them up with scoops of ice cream. They were an instant hit
among the public.

6. Corn Flakes – Crunchy Cereals
In 1894, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg was working in Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan
along with his brother Will Keith Kellogg. The brothers used different grains as part of
a strict vegetarian regimen for their patients. One day, they accidentally left some
cooked wheat, which went stale. They tried to roll the hardened dough. However, it
cracked into flakes, which they toasted and served it to their patients. The patients
liked them very much. They repeated this process with other grains and thus “Corn
Flakes” was invented.
