Classroom Management and the Teaching Learning Process
1. Were your students noisy or doing
unnecessary things when you taught? – that was
the question of our PT moderator to us during our
feedbacking. Immediately, I told myself YES,
some were. I said that I did expect for that because
I know the nature of high school students for the
reason that I was once too. But I was stunned when
he followed up his sentence by saying “Now you
know how I feel?”. I shrugged my shoulders and I
realized that he’s right and I feel sorry for myself.
Classroom management is another thing
that makes the teaching job harder. More than the
academic
preparations
that you must
have, the
ability to
manage your
class to
maintain the ideal climate suitable for learning is
very crucial. I have a class that when I first met
them, I appreciated their noise because it was
academic in nature. However, when the second
meeting came and they were really lousy and all
over the place, I felt irritated and I can’t help but
to tell them that they are not suppose to act that
way. Consequently, they shut up instantly. But the
noise comes over and over and I have to “sshhhh”
them again. If I can add something in the list of
daily routines of teachers aside from praying
before the class and the like, it would be the
“sshhhh” thing.
Another factor that makes classroom
management challenging is how can you solicit
answers from your students. If not hesitant, they
really don’t know the answer. I mean that they
would say- “I don’t have an idea Sir”. That is the
most scary answer that I could ever receive. That
is like an indirect response to conclude that I am
not effective but luckily, I haven’t received one
yet.
That’s where the teaching and learning
process comes in.
I
remember
asking my
students “Is
chemistry a
boring
subject?”.
“No sir, it’s just complicated that we can’t get it at
ease.”-they replied. Suddenly a lightbulb appeared
again on top of my head. Teaching is indeed the
hardest career one could ever have, as hard as
making the concepts that explain how the universe
works simple. Teachers need to exercise all their
skills, from linguistic to knowledge and even
kinetics to cater to the needs of the learners. We
can never take away teaching from learning and
learning from teaching because they are mutually
related with each other. The success of one relies
on the other. The teaching and learning process
that follows a sequence that once there is a missing
link, it could never proceed to the next.
