Pesticide is defined as any substance used to control pests like insects, weeds, rodents, and microbes that damage crops or transmit disease. Pesticides work by being toxic to the target pests but not humans. They are classified based on the pest they control and their chemical composition. Only 5% of pesticides applied actually reach their target, with the rest contaminating food, water, and air. Pesticide exposure poses risks to human health like increased cancer rates and accidental mortality in agricultural workers.
