What are Beacons?
A beacon is a transmitter at a specific location,emitting a continuous or periodic radio signal with limited content information
(e.g. identification, location).
Beacons indicate their presence so that enabled devices can locate them. Each beacon is assigned a unique identifier.
When a user’s device enters the beacon covered area, all installed apps subscribing to this unique identifier are notified.
•	 iBeacon = protocol standardised byApple.Various manufacturers have made iBeacon compatible hardware transmitters
-beacons-Bluetoothlowenergydevicesthatbroadcasttheirsignaltonearbyportableelectronicdevices.Thistechnology
enables these devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets) to perform different actions when in close proximity to an iBeacon.
•	 Eddystone = beacon technology profile released by Google in July 2015. Eddystone works on both Android and iOS,
while iBeacon is limited to iOS platforms. The open-source, cross platform technology provides users proximity data
and location through Bluetooth low energy beacon format.

Our solution
We propose a complete beacon solution: hardware (beacons) and software (the Application Programming Interface,
Content Management System, the Software Development Kit and the mobile application to connect with beacons).
1. Beacons hardware: we sell 2 beacon models to our customers, with different specifications, to cover both standard
needs (indoor marketing projects) and complex, more demanding specifications (harsh conditions, waterproof, motion
triggered broadcast, motion and position detection, temperature sensor, etc.);
The ProxiWave beacon features: different beaconing modes are available. Modes for high performance and long
battery life are available. The modes are:
- Sleep Mode with over 7 years of shelf life typical;
- ID Short Range Mode offers 100ms beacon interval, 15m range line-of-sight (LOS), and 1.5 months of battery life typical;
- ID Medium Range Mode offers 500ms beacon interval, 30m range, and 7.5 months of battery life typical;
- ID Long Range Mode offers 1s beacon interval, 75m range, and 12.5 months of battery life typical.
FCC, IC, and CE certified, RoHS, Reach and halogen free compliant.

2. Content Management System (CMS): The most simple and advanced marketing platform, the best solution to set
up, configure and analyze beacon enabled mobile marketing campaigns. Designed and configured from the perspective

with the support of global new and innovative features. ProxiWave’s easy to use menu and step by step visual indications

Our solution
3. API: The Application Programming Interface is the centralized software module in charge of providing the needed data
for all the other platforms (CMS, SDK). Its structure is made out of 3 components: HTTP Server, Real-Time Event Server
and Push Notification Server (APNS, GCM & MPS). It’s based on a RESTfull standard and open to direct querying via a
secured OAUTH2 provider for the clients that cannot benefit from our Software Development Kit.All of the API I/O are very
well documented for ease of use even for non-experience developers;
4. SDK: The Software Development Kit is the set of software development tools that enables the creation of applications
for the ProxiWave specific software framework.
	 a. The ProxiWave SDK will function in offline mode, therefore the client will never lose the users’ data. 	
	 b. All the events are in real-time – real time statistics and management.
	 c. The option to export data in a specific format to a URL made available by the client.
5. Our app: we provide an iOS and Android customized app for clients that don’t have yet mobile applications, in order to
use it to deploy the beacon enabled campaigns.We can also add special features or modules to the app, according to our
clients’ plans, taking into consideration our existing experience in developing complex mobile applications.

1. Mobile proximity marketing:
	 Depending on the location of your customers or users in your store/
building/room, if they have an enabled device, they will have the possibility
of receiving messages from the closest beacon. For example, when going
through a specific department, the local beacon can deliver:
	 • Location specific information on special offers, interesting facts,
targeted promotions, etc.;
	 • Contact customers and keep them informed while in-store to enrich
their experience.
	 As customers or users will move to a different location, a beacon from
the new area will alert them on products they are now in proximity to.

2. Micro-location and user targeting:
	 Knowing the customers or users’ exact location means it’s easy to send them relevant information at a precise
moment and context. Being able to monitor the clients’ behavior, interests and location patterns within a store, building
or other business means that we can obtain a clearer profile of the individual. In this way, we know what they purchase,
what is it that they are interested in - if they stay in a specific section/location. Thus, we can identify the factors that
trigger a purchase.
	 All these pieces of information can be collected and analyzed to get a completely personalized, relevant profile and
to deploy engaging conversations.

3. Indoor-mapping:
	 Micro-location targeting enables you to offer users valuable pieces of information while navigating large areas, such
as shopping centers, airports, museums, stadiums. For example, a person arriving in a shopping mall she is not familiar
with could be guided through it via beacons. A beacon at the entrance could welcome her and direct her to specific
locations of interests (stores, restaurants), presenting relevant offers where available.

4. Mobile tour guides:
	 Especially interesting for museums, exhibitions, cities, a user
could be guided through the points of interest, as well as providing
further information on their visit, to enrich their experience. Having
onlytheirmobiledeviceenabledtoreceivebeaconcommunications,
theusercanreapmoreadvantagesthanusingguidebooks,focusing
on exploring the respective location or city.
Receiving valuable and relevant pieces of information at key
attractions, as well as getting the best routes to take within the city
or the museum, would add an element of flexibility and freedom to
the user experience.

5. Mobile payments:
	 PayPal’s Beacon is a Beacon Low Energy module for stores and other
businessesenablingclientstopayhands-free.Thedevicesetsupcommunication
between points of sale and mobile devices without the use of GPS, wireless or
mobile networks.
	 The client would have to install the PayPal app on his mobile device,
set preferences for automatic check-in and approve being charged for the
purchased or consumed goods.
	 Once the client enters the location, a vibration notifies them of their
check-in, as their photo appears on the location and their picture appears on
the POS.
	 Verbal confirmation would complete the transaction, as the receipt would
be sent automatically by mail.

6. Data collection/Business Intelligence:
	 One of the most common benefits of beacons is providing the advantage of using the collected data for business
intelligence. Clients can use the data and learn, for example, about the number of people who walk by a given location in
a specific time interval, when is the highest traffic throughout the day/hour/month, how long an average person spends
inside the location or where exactly, within a location/store, people spend most of the time.This can be used to understand
who are the clients, how do they behave - these insights can become the ground for more accurate sales actions. As the
user opts-in, the data will be more accurate.

• Events & Conferences:
	 On the occasion of an event or conference, customized apps can be created for monetization. Users have to be
at the event so that the content be released, as beacons will be used to prove the visitor is present. Or the users who
have installed the event or conference app and are detected by beacons, can receive notifications related to speaker
presentations, schedule, additional information or materials related to the event.

• Cinema:
	 Placing a beacon next to a poster or screen presenting a movie, could promote similar movies coming soon to the
cinema.
Or remind clients of merchandising offers available in the lobby for the movie or after it.

• Hospitality:
Placing a beacon in each room allows a hotel to communicate directly to hosted app users. For example, the guest at an
event can be invited for drinks in the bar at a certain hour. This can be appreciated by a businessperson eager to make
contacts or simply socialize when one is away from home.20

•	 Retail:
	 o Individual, brand stores/chains: knowing there are other competitors near by, could offer a time limited offer to nearby
customers to make sure they get a share of the client’s wallet before their rivals. The discount can be decreased once the
time interval to entering the store increases (e.g. 30% for 5 minutes, 5% for 30 minutes).
	 o Large stores: beacons can be deployed around the store to take clients on purchasing journeys. A beacon placed
next to a specific brand could alert the customer about a matching accessory in a neighboring department.
	 o Shopping centers can use beacons to push offers or specific incentives from their tenants. They can also set up a
bidding system so that their tenants can bid to push their messages as soon as the customer enters the center or within a
time interval of the visit. Coffee shops could send messages to users present in the center for over 30 minutes to visit them
for a break.

• Banking:
	 When a customer would enter a branch, their phone would deliver a welcome notification. A summary of available
services can be displayed on the app connected to the bank beacons.There can also be a personalized map of the branch,
or a special offer reflecting the customer’s personal banking history. The bank can collect the customer data and used it
to manage the interactions and sales promotions targeting the customer.

• Airports:
Can track a user’s route through the airport and send reminders if they are late for their departure. Or they can send a
parking location reminder; the same beacon used for parking location reminder can send a notification with a discount for
the airport parking if the user joins the airport’s promotional scheme.

• Energy:
	 Beacons placed in the office or home are used to determine whether an user enters or exits to change the power
saving mode of the electronic devices (PC, monitors, lights). This approach can reduce energy consumption without
causing user inconvenience.

	 Beacons can be used to customize the behavior of connected devices around the house. For example, lighting or
electronic devices can be configured to work when users are detected in the range of the beacon, carrying phones with
customized apps.

Hospitals can use beacons to guide patients and visitors to units, as well as provide indications and procedures available in
the entire building or specific departments.

• Transportation:
Beacons can be deployed on airports or ground stations so that notifications on departures, delays, gate and platform
assignments can be instantly delivered to passengers’ phones. Beacons can also help with payment automation, traffic
flow optimization, route monitoring, finding routes. Information can be delivered in terms of walking time for airport gates,
the location of the nearest ATM or provision of up to date boarding information.

• Sales promotions:
	 As beacons are very small, they can be incorporated into packaging, promotional products, point-of-sale materials.
For example, an FMCG product can use beacons in a display or special package, linked to a competition or game app.
Clients can download the app and enter the competition/play the game and collect rewards as they would go to a store
where the detection of the beacon would validate that they have entered the location.

Museums, art galleries can use the users’ location, identified with the support of the beacon, to provide content
linked to individual exhibits or galleries.When the visitors approach the end of their visit and are still in the area of beacons,
can receive notifications from a gift shop with buying suggestions as reminders of their visit.

  • 3. What are Beacons? A beacon is a transmitter at a specific location,emitting a continuous or periodic radio signal with limited content information (e.g. identification, location). Beacons indicate their presence so that enabled devices can locate them. Each beacon is assigned a unique identifier. When a user’s device enters the beacon covered area, all installed apps subscribing to this unique identifier are notified. • iBeacon = protocol standardised byApple.Various manufacturers have made iBeacon compatible hardware transmitters -beacons-Bluetoothlowenergydevicesthatbroadcasttheirsignaltonearbyportableelectronicdevices.Thistechnology enables these devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets) to perform different actions when in close proximity to an iBeacon. • Eddystone = beacon technology profile released by Google in July 2015. Eddystone works on both Android and iOS, while iBeacon is limited to iOS platforms. Beacons hardware: we sell 2 beacon models to our customers, with different specifications, to cover both standard needs (indoor marketing projects) and complex, more demanding specifications (harsh conditions, waterproof, motion triggered broadcast, motion and position detection, temperature sensor, etc.); The ProxiWave beacon features: different beaconing modes are available. Modes for high performance and long battery life are available. The modes are: - Sleep Mode with over 7 years of shelf life typical; - ID Short Range Mode offers 100ms beacon interval, 15m range line-of-sight (LOS), and 1.5 months of battery life typical; - ID Medium Range Mode offers 500ms beacon interval, 30m range, and 7.5 months of battery life typical; - ID Long Range Mode offers 1s beacon interval, 75m range, and 12.5 months of battery life typical.   • 11. Our solution 3. API: The Application Programming Interface is the centralized software module in charge of providing the needed data for all the other platforms (CMS, SDK). Its structure is made out of 3 components: HTTP Server, Real-Time Event Server and Push Notification Server (APNS, GCM & MPS). It’s based on a RESTfull standard and open to direct querying via a secured OAUTH2 provider for the clients that cannot benefit from our Software Development Kit.All of the API I/O are very well documented for ease of use even for non-experience developers; 4. SDK: The Software Development Kit is the set of software development tools that enables the creation of applications for the ProxiWave specific software framework. a. The ProxiWave SDK will function in offline mode, therefore the client will never lose the users’ data. b. All the events are in real-time – real time statistics and management. c. The option to export data in a specific format to a URL made available by the client. 5. Our app: we provide an iOS and Android customized app for clients that don’t have yet mobile applications, in order to use it to deploy the beacon enabled campaigns.We can also add special features or modules to the app, according to our clients’ plans, taking into consideration our existing experience in developing complex mobile applications. 11
