Best Instructional Practices for Student Growth
1. The Best Instructional Practices
For Student Growth
Bobby Dodd
Principal
Gahanna Lincoln High School
2. Learning Targets for the Session
• I can incorporate the best practices in my
school and classroom on my return.
• I can share and explain to others the best
practices that should exist in each school and
classroom.
• I have the knowledge and know where to go
to expand my knowledge regarding tools to
use for best practices.

3. We Have to Want to Be Great
• As educators we have to want to be the best
#BFKSOAR
9. Learning Targets
• They need to “Come To Life”
• Clear, with concrete examples
• Don’t just mention the targets once and move
on
#BFKSOAR
10. Metacognition
• Otherwise known as Student-Led Learning
• Teachers working as facilitators
• Takes time – Takes a lot of Practice – Teachers
have responsibility to help students
• Don’t throw students to the wolves – Plan the
curriculum accordingly
• Creates a more Personalized Learning
environment

11. Feedback
• Students need to know where they stand
• “Great Job!” “Excellent!” is not feedback
• Students need instant feedback
• Use technology for instant feedback
– Different tools like Plickers, Nearpod, Google
Forms, Padlet, TodayMeet
• Students also need to be able to give feedback
to educators
– Email, Twitter, Padlet, RemindHQ, Slack

13. Formative Assessments
• Practice prepares for the game.
• Technology is good, but use any strategies you
can to help students prepare
#BFKSOAR
14. Formative Assessments
• Homework & Quizzes
– Practice!
– Establish a culture of Homework & Quizzes as
practice to prepare
– “My students don’t do their homework! How are
they practicing if they don’t do what they are
supposed to do?”
– Go over work in class – explain how it is practice
and provide feedback
#BFKSOAR
15. Engagement
• Get our students engaged
• Working with technology, working with others
• Allow for student choice and voice
• Create lessons that come to life
#BFKSOAR
17. Alternative Assessments
• Why don’t we let students show us what they
know in different ways?
• “We’re preparing them for the real world.”
• “That’s not how they assess in college.”
#BFKSOAR
18. Alternative Assessments
• How about we let students:
– Create videos
– Create presentations
– Create projects
• Taking tests every week doesn’t produce
growth, it produces memorizers
#BFKSOAR
20. Increase the Use of Technology
• Let the instruction guide what technology to
use
• SmartBoards and PowerPoints are technology,
but the focus needs to be on how you use
them.
• We need to get rid of the term “Blended
Learning” – it needs to become “Learning”
#BFKSOAR
22. “Blended” Learning
• 3 areas to make “Blended” Learning just
“Learning:
1. Embed Blended Learning in your Culture
1. Need, Learn, Model, Emulate
2. Develop Learning
1. Don’t Say “No”
2. Use Your Building/Class Time to Grow
3. Personalize Your Building
#BFKSOAR
23. Personalized Learning
• Limit the amount of lectures/direct instruction
• If you don’t know much about personalizing
instruction, be a learner
– Use the 4 C’s to become stronger
– Read and Research
– See what others are doing
#BFKSOAR
25. Relationships & Environment
• The most growth occurs when healthy student-
teacher relationships exist.
• We tell our staff to focus on the portion of the
OTES rubric on “Classroom Environment”
– Why do so many people not like going to the BMV?
– Compare that to a Dentist Office?
• If there is not a positive environment in your
classroom/building, you do not have a very good
chance of helping students grow.
