The mousedeer was a small forest animal, but he was very cunning. He played tricks on
other animals and they were angry with him. One day, the mousedeer went for a walk along the
beach. A small hermit crab saw him and decided to teach him a lesson.
“Mousedeer, I can run faster than you do,“ claimed the crab. “Faster than I do? That’s
impossible,” replied the mousedeer. “Let’s have a race,” said the crab.
The crab had a plan to trick the mousedeer. She gathered her friends and told them to
hide in the sand at each checkpoint. “When you hear the mousedeer pass by, jump out,” ordered
the crab.
The next day, before the start of the race, the crab told the mousedeer, “When you reach
each checkpoint, call out ‘Crab, are you still running?’ If there is no answer, then you are the
winner.”
The race started. The mousedeer ran as fast as he could. At the first checkpoint, he
called out to the crab. To his surprise, the crab was there. Altogether, there were 7 checkpoints
and the crab was waiting at each checkpoint. The mousedeer ran even faster. He wanted to
win badly. He reached the finishing line. What did he see? The hermit crab! The hermit crab
smiled to herself. In her mind, she said, “There’s a trick in every trade.”

grumble about his wife. He thought she spent too much time talking with her friends.
The wife said, “I have been working since dawn.”
“What have you been doing? Show me,” said the man.
“Oh, I do so many small things,” the wife said.
“Excuses, excuses,” he said.
The wife then said, “All right, I will list all the things I do but you must do the same.
Tomorrow you must put aside a stone for each thing you do.”
The next day during dinner, the man showed his wife the stones he set aside.
“This stone is for taking the buffaloes out. Two, for spreading the paddy and then
threshing it. This is for sifting out the grain. Lastly, another stone for putting the grain in
a bag.”
“You have divided one job into several tasks. Look at the number of stones I have.
First, I fetched water. Then I collected the cow dung and spread it on the floor. Then I
cooked. After that, I bathed the children, fed them and put them to sleep. Next, I washed
the dishes, cleaned the rice for tomorrow, washed the clothes, and lastly swept the floor.
So what have you to say?” the wife said.
The man had nothing to say. From that day on, he did not grumble at her.
