2. WHY?
• Around 3 billion people cook and heat their homes using open
fires and simple stoves burning biomass (wood, animal dung
and crop waste) and coal.
• Over 4 million people die prematurely from illness attributable
to the household air pollution from cooking with solid fuels.
• More than 50% of premature deaths due to pneumonia among
children under 5 are caused by the particulate matter (soot)
inhaled from household air pollution.
• 3.8 million premature deaths annually from non communicable
diseases including stroke, ischaemic heart disease, chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer are
attributed to exposure to household air pollution.
3. OUR RESPONSE
• In partnership with Mercy Corps and Twining’s of UK,
Socio Educational Welfare Association (SEWA), has piloted
a clean cook stove project in the tea estates in and around
Dibrugarh, Assam. The objective of this pilot project was
to promote the adoption of 1,000 clean cook Stoves in tea
estate workers’ homes.
• The project was designed to tackle the indoor air pollution
through the adoption of improved cook stoves by the tea
estate communities.
4. ACHIEVEMENT’S
Key IMPACTS Target Achievement
1000 Households use fuel-efficient stoves in
their homes
1000 806
At least 2,000 women and children will
spend less time collecting firewood and
have increased time for productive
activities or schooling.
2000
1933 ( 1278 women
+655 children)
At least 6,000 people will be less exposed to
health risks from smoke inhalation.
6000 4800
11. IMPACT of clean cook stove
If 90% of the 1,200 households
on Dhoedaam tea estate alone
used fuel-efficient cookstoves,
collectively they would use
1,686,960kg less firewood and
save INR 84,34,800 per year.
(1562 kg firewood is saved
annually by each house using
clean cook stove)
