2. “My clients are a like a giant family that just keeps getting
bigger,” says Betsy McDowell of The McDowell Group with
Keller Williams Atlanta Perimeter. As an independent agent,
Betsy represents primarily residential in-town Atlanta buyers and
sellers and some commercial real estate. “My business is built
on relationships, so I’ll go anywhere in the metro area to meet a
client’s needs,” she says. Much of her business is with luxury-
sector listings and buyers, but she is more focused on the synergy
between herself and her clients than the price point.
“I run my company like a corporation,” she says. “I have extremely
high standards for myself and my team in terms of values,
processes and procedures.” Everyone on her team understands
they are in the relationship business; she even tells her clients
they’re together forever. “I say, ‘You’re going to be stuck with
me even after the transaction!’” In one recent example, she repre-
sented a client on four transactions. “We started when they sold a
$200,000 house and I just sold them a $1.3 million home!”
In the mid-2000s, Betsy worked simultaneously for Delta Airlines
and as a REALTOR®
. “I was originally a flight attendant after
graduating from Auburn University where I earned my pilot’s
license while getting my degree. I later worked on the corpo-
rate side at Delta as well doing training for the airline,” she says.
“Along the way, my own REALTOR®
said he thought I would
enjoy the business, so I got my license in 2004.” With her love
of helping people achieve their goals, combined with her corpo-
rate background, she naturally gravitated to the work and chose to
devote herself to real estate full time.
Being a “people person” and natural networker factored heavily
into Betsy’s decision; she loves connecting with others, hosting
multiple, large-scale client appreciation events and parties each
year. Most recently, she reached out to her massive family of cli-
ents with pairs of tickets to this fall’s PGA Tour Championship at
East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta. “It’s a beautiful course; every-
body loves it.” Her annual spring event takes place at a social club
in Buckhead. “I’m social, I can’t help it! I call, I pop by and I am
always in touch!” Her greatest pleasure in real estate is the lasting
friendships she forms while helping people realize their dreams.
The resulting increase in business is an added bonus. “I just
received two referrals this week from previous clients and
clients send ME gifts in the mail!” she says.
When marketing properties, Betsy takes advantage of the bene-
fits of her Keller Williams Realty affiliation and stays up-to-date
on the latest technology. She recently took a class in drone pho-
tography and is adding some innovative guided-tour features to
her videos. “I also have close relationships with other local and
national agents,” she says, explaining that she frequently refers
business to other agents who might be a better fit for a particular
client’s needs. “It’s always about what is best for the client.” For
the future, she is expanding her team carefully and providing new
services to her clients.
Driven by her commitment to serve, Betsy divides her time
between family, her real estate company and community. “My
husband and I have two young sons and we are equally active in
their school and extracurricular activities. I also serve on many
local boards,” she says. Among them, WINGS for Mercy Care
Foundation raises funds for health services and provides assis-
tance for marginalized people who otherwise could not receive
care. “We raised more than half a million dollars at our ball this
year,” says Betsy. She is also involved with the Maritime Founda-
tion at Lake Lanier, where she volunteers on behalf of their efforts
to help children develop a love of the water. In addition, she and
her family are active with their church, their children’s school,
and numerous community fundraisers and charities. Along with
making the world a better place through her real estate and
community service, Betsy loves to travel, exercise, learn new
things, and visit the lake with her family.
