Private Residence - Full Renovation
This 180m2 1960’s bungalow was completely renovated for
a private client to bring it totally up-to-date. As well as the
installation of ultra-insulated triple glazed units to all
windows and doors the project utilised an air-source heat
pump, solar panels and a power storage facility to contain
the generated power for later use. This property was
transformed into an almost self-sufficient eco-home.
Inside the entire property was gutted and refitted with all
mod-cons including energy efficient LED lighting and under
floor heating.
5. Ben North - Portfolio of Work 5
JANUARY 2015 – APRIL 2016
I gained a place at Nottingham Trent University on merit from my years of working on-site
and my previous project experience. NTU is a world renowned university with
endorsements from the most prestigious professional bodies in the construction industry
such as CIOB and RICs; both of which I am now a member. I earned a distinction for my
MSc and now have extensive up-to-date knowledge of construction management issues
including health and safety, contract law, programming, scheduling, innovation, working
with teams, sequencing and resource allocation, CDM 2015, asbestos awareness and
project management. The course also required the production of many construction
reports most of which I gained the highest grades. I chose innovation in construction as my
dissertation subject which required extensive research of how new ideas are effectively
adopted by the industry.
MSc Construction Management
6. MSc Coursework
Rutland Water Volunteer Training Centre
Ben North - Portfolio of Work
6
This module involved studying the plans for a proposed training centre to be built on the shores of
Rutland Water Reservoir. From the drawings, I had to produce a full BOQ, plant allocation chart,
labour histogram and a Gantt chart listing all the activities required to complete the build including;
critical path, network flow diagrams, WBS and risk analysis.
8. MSc Coursework
Rutland Water Volunteer Training Centre
Risk Analysis
Ben North - Portfolio of Work
8
The risk analysis performed for this project was covered by a separate module which went into
great detail about pre and post mitigation strategies, risk scoring, opportunity capitalisation,
probability scales and weather modelling.
9. MSC Coursework
Business Environment Mace Group
Ben North - Portfolio of Work
9
This module required an in-depth look into a
construction companies profile and published
accounts to perform a critical review of the
company’s performance; past and present with
an aim to make comparisons against its
competitors.
Using information available in the public
domain and FAME analysis, statistics were
compiled to show such factors as turnover,
return on investment, shareholder dividends,
capital , debt and market sectors.
10. MSC Coursework Dissertation:
Innovation in Construction
Ben North - Portfolio of Work
10
This 20,000 word piece of work constituted a third of
the overall degree and was the key component of
obtaining a MSc. I choose the subject of innovation in
the construction industry and reviewed as much of the
available literature as possible. From there I put
together hypotheses and tested them using survey
instruments and data analysis. Using my contacts in
the industry I was able to gain a valuable insight into
the levels of innovation already present in
construction and compare it to the perceived notions
given in the literature.
The results allowed me to put forward
recommendations to foster innovation with an aim to
take advantage of new technologies and gain a
competitive advantage in the marketplace.
