The document summarizes the results of a music questionnaire given to 10 students and adults between the ages of 11-50+. The questionnaire was designed to gather information to help produce their own music magazine. Based on the results, the target audience for the magazine should be 16-20 year olds who enjoy rock music. Both males and females would be interested. Most people buy magazines once a month or weekly. Popular existing magazines among respondents were Kerrang and NME for younger audiences and Rolling Stone and Q for older audiences. Respondents said attractive front covers with eye-catching colors would make them more likely to purchase a new magazine.

Questionnaire Results
1. Questionnaire results
Using a music questionnaire which I designed, I asked a random sample of 10 students and adults
from the ages of 11-50+ about music magazines; I did this to gather information so I could produce
my own magazine.
I asked questions to help me decide on layout, content and photographs for my own magazine.
What is your gender?
Male
Female
“What is your gender?” I asked both 5 male and 5 females to fill in the
questionnaire to get an equal response. This was asked to see if there was a
difference between what males and females like to listen to so I could decide on
whether my target audience for the magazine I make would be for males or females.
Based on my results I can see that both males and females would buy the same
genre of music magazine and that this would most likely be rock/indie.
What genre of music do you like to listen to?
Pop
Rock
Country
Indie
Jazz
Dance
R&B
Hip Hop
“What genre of music do you like to listen to?” I asked this question to get a
understanding of what genre of music people prefer listening to so I could make a music
magazine which would be popular. From my results I can see that my target audience
should be people who listen to the rock genre because this was the genre of music which
was chosen the most.
2. Questionnaire results
How old are you?
11-15 Years Old
16-20 Years Old
21-25 Years Old
26-30 Years Old
31-35 Years Old
36-40 Years Old
41-45 Years Old
46-50 Years Old
“How old are you?” This question was on my questionnaire so I could decide the age of target
audience for my magazine based on which age group listened to/bought music magazines the most.
From my results I can see that the age group of 16-20 year old's purchased magazines the most so
the audience I aim my magazine towards should be older teenagers
Employment Status
Full time
Part Time
Volunteer
Unemployed
“Employment status” I wanted to know the employment status of the people who regularly
bought magazines so it would help me decide on a price for my magazine which would be
acceptable for people from all types of employments. From my results it shows that most
part time or full time employed people buy magazines more than unemployed people.
3. Questionnaire results
How often do you buy a music magazine?
More than once a week
Once a week
More than once a month
Once a month
Once every six months
Once every year
More than once a year
Never
“How often do you buy magazines?” I asked this question so that I would have an
understanding of how often to sell the magazine, either weekly, monthly or every few
months. From my results I can see that it would most likely sell more if it was sold on a
regular basis every week. However apart from this, the question didn't help my research too
much because if people bought the same magazine regularly every month then they would
have put 'once a month' and this doesn't reflect how often they would buy the magazine
which I produce.
What music magazine do you buy?
Kerrang
NME
Rolling Stone
Uncut
Q
4. Questionnaire results
“What music magazine do you buy?” From conducting this question I wanted to receive the
results of what genre of magazine the age ranges usually went for. Looking at the results I
can see that magazines such as Kerrang and NME were popular among the 16-20 age group
and the slightly older age groups preferred to buy magazines such as Rolling Stone or Q.
From the results I can narrow down what type of magazine I should be producing for the
specific age group and audience that I want my magazine to appeal to.
The last question I asked was “What makes you buy a magazine?” For the last question, I
used an open question for this to get lots of different results so when I produce my magazine
I could include as many of these ideas as possible. From most of the feedback that I
received, the biggest thing that attracts someone to buy a magazine is whoever is featured
on the front cover. The second most popular answer was that people are attracted to buying
the magazine if the colours on the front cover stand out and if they are also used well, it
makes them want to purchase the magazine whereas they wouldn't if looked dull, boring or
cluttered.
