Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you , our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, quesrions, directions.
Exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Eac part should part should guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understandthe lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This
will tell you if you need to proceed on completing thus module or if you need to ask
your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test tp self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will
be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read
the instructionscarefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks

What I Need to Know
You see percent (%) sign everywhere, in the market, malls, magazines,
newspapers and on your cellphones or tablets. So, it is important that you know and
understand the meaning of percent as well as the relationship of percent, fraction,
ratio and decimals.
At the end of this module you are expected to:
 visualize percent and its relationship to fractions, ratios, and decimal
numbers using models. (M5NSIIIa-136)
 define percentage, rate or percent, and base. (M5NSIIIa-137)
 identify the base, percentage, and rate in a problem. (M5NSIIIa-138)

Relationship of Percent,
Fractions, Ratios
and Decimals
It was in the 15th century when the idea of percent began. It came from the Latin
word, “per centum “ which means “ for every hundred”. A percent is a ratio of a
number to 100. It is represented by the symbol “%”.

Compare the shaded part in each grid.
Changing Percent to Fraction
Percent may be written in fraction form. To change percent to a fraction, remove
the percent symbol (%) and write the number as numerator, then 100 as
denominator. This is from the definition that percent means for “every hundred.”
Change the fraction to lowest term, if possible.
Example:

Changing Percent to Decimal
Percent may also be written as a decimal number. To change percent to decimal,
write the percent as a fraction, then divide the numerator by the denominator.
Example:
Another way of changing percent to decimal, change percent symbol (%) to
decimal point then move it twice to the left.
Example:
1) 15% = 0.15
2) 9% = 0.09
3) 68% = 0.68
Changing Percent to Ratio
Percent is a ratio with 100 as the second term. So, to change percent to ratio,
remove the percent sign and write 100 as the second term.
Example:
1. 27% = 27 : 100
2. 5% = 5: 100
3. 87% = 87:100
4. 1% = 1:100

5. Kristine packed 20 grapes and a pear in her lunch. She ate thirteen grapes and
a pear. What percent of the grapes did Kristine eat?

2 Base, Percentage and Rate
In Mathematics, percent are used like fractions and decimals, as a way to describe
parts of a whole. When you are using percent, the whole is considered to be made
up of a hundred equal parts. In order to apply percent in our daily life,
understanding its elements, rate, base and percentage is a must.

The number sentence in this problem:
75% of 40 is ________.
What is the missing part in the mathematical sentence?
a. How many pupils did Mrs. Robles have in all?
Answer: 40 is a whole or total number. It is called base.
b. How many percent of the pupils attended the magic show?
Answer: 75% is the rate which can be expressed as a ratio or as fraction

c. How many pupils attended the magic show?
Answer: 30 is 75% of 40.
30 is the percentage. It is a part of the whole.
Therefore the missing element is percentage.
What is It
Study these examples.
15% of 60 is 9.
 15% is the rate. It is given as percent. It can be expressed as a ratio or
as a fraction.
Rate is the number with the % sign.
 60 is called the base. It is the whole of which you take the percent.
Base is the number that usually follows the phrase “percent of”.
 9 is called the percentage, meaning part of the whole.
Percentage at a constant rate is directly proportional with base.
In symbols:
P = R x B , where P is the percentage, R is the rate and B is the base.
Another example:
54 is 45% of 120
Rate = 45%
Base = 120
Percentage = 54

To change percent to a fraction, remove the percent symbol (%) and write the number as numerator, then 100 as denominator. What is It Study these examples. 15% of 60 is 9.  15% is the rate. It is given as percent. It can be expressed as a ratio or as a fraction. Rate is the number with the % sign.  60 is called the base. It is the whole of which you take the percent. Base is the number that usually follows the phrase “percent of”.  9 is called the percentage, meaning part of the whole. Percentage at a constant rate is directly proportional with base.
