Quarter 3 – Module 3:
Make a Stand
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each
SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

What I Need to Know
This module is designed and written to help you focus on how to make a stand in
current issues happening in society.

Lesson

Are you aware of the issues happening in our country? Maybe you know a lot in a
digital world of social media, online/ video gaming, and trending news or hit songs
on radio and television. Were you able to agree or disagree with those issues?
What’s In
Read the paragraph below. Make a topic outline by filling in the details. (This article
is available at Joy in Learning English 5, LM page 117)
The Importance and Conservation of Forests
Kristine Erika C. Castillo
Forests are very useful. They supply lumber which is used for building houses,
stones, offices, and other building houses, stones, offices, and other buildings. Some
forest trees give materials for making pulp, paper, wallboard and furniture, rattan,
gum, and firewood. Medicinal plants are also taken from forests.
2
The government and every community are duty-bound to conserve forests. Cutting
of young trees and clearing of land through kaingin must be strictly prohibited.
Planting of new trees to replace those that have been cut should be observed. Further
studies to improve forest conservation is therefore desired.
Complete the outline in your notebook.

Taking a stand means to voice your opinion on issues that are happening. To make
a stand is to determine effort to agree or disagree, to defend something and to oppose
or commend something.
Here are the tips on how you can make a stand.
1. Look at your own experiences.
2. Collect information about the topic. Always base your opinion on facts.
3. Know what is right and wrong. Always be on the right side.
4. Narrate your opinion properly by stating all your reasons.
The key is to completely believe in the topic. If you do not believe what you are telling,
you cannot convince the listener or the reader.
Remember the formula: Information + personal experiences = your stand

How have Korean Dramas Influenced Philippine Industry?
Do you still remember Meteor Garden? It was one of the most popular and memorable
Asian dramas broadcast in the Philippines. When it was shown on television, most
teens at the time were eager to go home to watch the episodes. Since then, various
Asian dramas have been emerging and, presently, Korean dramas are one of the most
popular in Asia, if not around the world. Many children, teens, and even adults have
adored Korean dramas ever since these were introduced in the Philippines in 2000s.
Filipinos have always been welcoming of foreign trends and culture. As such, Korean
culture and trends as seen in Korean dramas have invaded and been deeply rooted
in the Philippine society today. Korean dramas have greatly influenced the food,
fashion, cosmetics, music, and entertainment industries, as well as people’s views
and preferences.
