Good Stuff Happens in 1:1 Meetings: Why you need them and how to do them well
DU Bookstore
1. The entrance to the DU Bookstore
where students come to
purchase, rent, and sell course
books for their classes. Which has
recently come under new
ownership by Follet. Since the
takeover students have found it
increasingly difficult to find all the
text books for their classes.
2. Some books are in
stock, but other
shelves are empty and
have no books with
backorder forms in
their place.
3. Students Sam Thomsen
and Jens Olsen said
they haven't seen this
many empty shelves in
their tenure at DU, or
had any trouble
obtaining their books
before this quarter.
Head of the
Undergraduate
Department of English
also says she has never
encountered this
problem and says
Follett's “corporate
business model that
comes in and replaces
the bottom line with
profit rather than
students” as the
problem.
4. Student Sam Tomsen
looks to buy his Intro to
American Politics
textbooks from the
bookstore, but is only
able to find back order
instead of his required
books.
5. Communication text
books are a hot
commodity flying off the
shelves faster than
students get their hands
on them. Once again
backorder forms are put
in their place.
6. Students are helped
by the University of
Denver Bookstore
staff to check out the
books that were still
available.
8. While students like Jens Olsen and Sam Thomsen were able to get a couple
of books they could not get all of them for the start of their classes. This
student was able to buy a couple books, but still had to order more.
9. A back order form sits
on the shelf where
course books for the
4000 level Health
Care class should be.
The book store offered
free two day shipping,
to students who went
through the order
form process, but
they couldn’t always
deliver. Jens Olsen
said “the bookstore
said ‘well we will get
the books to you in
two days,’ but it took
a week and a half to
get it into the store.”
10. Some students like Jens Olsen (pictured above) and Sam Thomsen had over 100 pages
of reading to catch up on.
13. Amazon offers the same textbook, Intro to Econometrics for 25 percent
($51.36) less than the University of Denver Bookstore for a new
copy, and $35.25 less for a used copy.
14. The effects of lack of textbooks has been evident. “Well one of the classes we have been
having daily quizzes on the reading and I didn’t get my book until [2 weeks after class
began]…it has definitely been hurting my grade.” Said Jens Olsen
