BDPA-Richmond Wins the 2002 Distinguished Service Award from
the Metropolitan Business League

On Saturday, January 19, 2002, the Metropolitan Business League (MBL), Richmond’s oldest minority
business development organization, honored BDPA-Richmond. BDPA won the 'Distinguished Service Award',
presented by Capital One. BDPA was recognized before an audience of over 900, including MBL members
and business and political leaders at MBL's annual Member Awards Banquet which was held at the Richmond
Marriott. The keynote speaker was incoming Governor Mark Warner.
Approximately 20 members represented BDPA-Richmond at
the banquet.

As incoming BDPA-Richmond President, I accepted the award
on behalf of BDPA. It was indeed an honor for me to
represent you and accept the award for BDPA. The award
recognizes the hard work and dedication of many BDPA-
Richmond members, like you, who volunteer your time,
energy, resources, and experience to advance our programs in
the Richmond community. I am proud of all of your
accomplishments and I want to thank each member and friend
of BDPA individually for all that you do to help BDPA remain a
leader in community service in Richmond. The longevity of our
middle school, high school, and adult training programs is a
testament to how organizations can give back to the
communities in which they live. BDPA sets the example of

membership. BDPA is special, and your contribution to BDPA
is sincerely appreciated. This is your award. A special news
report about BDPA was videotaped by the Fox Network and
presented at the MBL Banquet. A special report was shown on
the Fox Network (Richmond Channel 35), during their 10 p.m.
news each evening during the week of 21-25 January.

Trigon Supports the Black Data Processing Associates’ High School Computer Training
Program

For the past eight years, Trigon has been a proud supporter of the Black Data Processing
Associates’ (BDPA) computer training program. In addition to supporting the program financially,
the company's employees volunteer with the program. And, prior to the recent growth of the
program, students even used Trigon's computer training labs to develop their skills. Designed to
help Richmond area students in grades 8 - 11 learn more about technology, the BDPA computer
training program covers topics including managing databases, client-server technology, Web
design, operating systems, programming languages, and communication and presentation skills.
In addition to the personal achievement that inevitably results from the positive relationships the
students and volunteers develop, a select group of participants receive $500 scholarships to the
college of their choice. Students commit to attend class every Saturday between March and
August. When the training is complete, five are selected to travel to and compete in the national
BDPA conference. At the national conference the students compete as a team. They must
participate in an oral exam, complete a programming exam and make a formal presentation to a
panel of judges. Each member on the winning team receives an additional $1,000 scholarship.

2002 High School Computer Class Kickoff

Call for Volunteers
BDPA-Richmond’s Education Committee plans to kickoff the 2002 HSCC training on March 2, 2002. We are in
search of volunteer trainers and classroom assistants. Your expertise and that of your friends, co-workers, and
family members is needed. Please post this notice at your office, church, recreation centers, etc. If you are
interested or know of others who have the skills listed below and the interest in volunteering time on Saturdays
9 a.m. – 12 p.m. between March and August to educate our high school youth, please contact Juan Potts at
(804) 560-9663. Our plans are to cover the topics below by segmenting the training into specific blocks of
time. We are hoping to recruit enough trainers to have 2 trainers per class as well as a minimum of two
classroom assistants to remove the stress of the same faithful few trainers conducting all the training this year.
We are seeking volunteer trainers with the following skills:
• MS ACCESS
• HTML
• Active Server Pages (ASP)
• ActiveX Data Objects (ADO)
• VBScript
We are seeking volunteer classroom assistants with the following skills:
1. Very familiar with the Windows environment,
2. Willing to learn along with the students in order to provide assistance,
3. Familiar with some type of programming language,
4. Familiar with Web applications database/SQL experience and ad hoc reporting (Crystal Reports)

BDPA Richmond 2001 Accomplishments
Quiz Bowl
Middle school technology training was held during the Spring at 10 middle schools with the single elimination
competition in May. The final competition of the Quiz Bowl was held in June and the 4 members of the winning
team received laptop computers, donated by Avaya Communications.
HSCC
High School Computer Competition training began in the Spring with 30 students and classes were held at
Philip Morris each Saturday morning through the first of August. Two class levels were held, our first time
students and advanced students. Our competition team of 5 students went to Chicago for the National
Conference and competition. A total of 60 people, including 20 students, represented Richmond.
New Website
The web team worked on the new website each Monday evening for most of the year. The new web site is
continuously updated with new information and the team is preparing for the next development phase.
Elections
The organizational structure changed to match the structure of the National BDPA. The Bylaws were updated
with organizational structure changes
New Relationships
New partnering relationships were established with the Richmond Leadership Network and the Metropolitan
Business League
Family Fun Day
Family Fun Day was held at Haddads in August.
Holiday Celebration was held in December.
Member Training
A 4 Hour Introduction to Oracle Workshop was held and the Oracle Database Training had 24 students.
