Great BAs need to know how people work and exactly what to do to influence and motivate them. This challenge is even more important when we move remote as our ability to influence is challenged through lack of context and reduction of information.

Why do we
need to
influence?
“How can I get stakeholders to attend
my meetings?
“How can I get stakeholders to buy-in on
the project?”
“Who am I to argue with my
stakeholders?”
“In our organization they shoot the
messenger.”
15. Influence is about Informing

Data vs
Information
Bad:
● A list of dates and numbers
Better:
● A graph showing an increase over time
Best:
● A graph with a projection and a
supporting paragraph on how the
increase is logarithmic
Data are raw, unorganized facts that
need to be processed.
Information is when you give data the
context it needs to make it useful.

Influencing
Business
Stakeholders
● Be strategic in how you influence your
stakeholders
● 10% not 5%
● Think about their internal narrative
● Craft information, don’t overload with data
The change you want to make comes
from giving the right person the right
information at the right time

Why and what
Main content - Data vs Information
Some examples
Who am I?Normally I’d be networking before and after so you could get to know me
Now I have to rely on a slide!
I’ve done pretty much every job in software development
Through a series of unfortunate accidents I found myself leading technical teams very early in my career
Made every mistake in the book and learnt from them
A lot of people come to me saying one of these things:
When you dig further, it is evident that there is a common mindset that life as a Business Analyst would be so much easier if project stakeholders and project management cooperated as requested.
There is also an underlying implication that as Business Analysts, we do not have the authority or ability to compel needed contributions.
To get to the finish line, we resort to prodding and nagging people.
When that fails, we escalate to individuals who have the organizational power to get the results we want. (I will talk to your boss!)
I have a different perspective.
I take the approach that as Business Analysts, we need to adopt a mindset that we are leaders.
We are not going to get authority based on positional power.
We will need to empower ourselves.
We need to lead with influence.
If this is a difficult idea for you to take into your mindset then I want to introduce a concept
Locus of control
...
...
Because there’s one fact that’s always true
...
We have to work with them, we don’t have a choice
We can either throw our hands up in the air and despair, or we can find a way to influence them so we can get our jobs done
So then, if we know we want it - then what is it?
Is it persuasion, manipulation?
Does it come from authority? Hopefully I convinced you earlier that it isn’t
I have quite a simple way that I think about influence
...
At Pillar Leaders we have a 5 step model for designing the influence you have with your stakeholders
One of those steps is making sure you are being strategic with the information you give someone
Now there’s a very important word in there.
“Information”
These are two fundamentally different concepts
We often find ourselves drifting towards data when we should be giving information
In our 5 step influence model one of the most important ones is to check Internal Narrative
5% not 10%
