Auroville Green Practices (AGP) 3H Summer School program is an initiative using Auroville and its outstanding experience in sustainable living and cultural diversity as a platform for learning and personal growth for students from around the world. The 3H Summer School program serves as an experimental and cross-disciplinary design laboratory connecting core human values, design theory, ideation and on-site building application around the selected lead theme Unity & Diversity; Building for Cultural Encounters. The aim is to train a new generation of environmental and socially responsible leaders that are capable of connecting hands (capacity), head (system thinking) and heart (personal strength) while working on system change for a more socially and environmentally just future.

PROGRAM
Auroville Green Practices (AGP) 3H Summer School program is an initiative using
Auroville and its outstanding experience in sustainable living and cultural diversity as
a platform for learning and personal growth for students from around the world. The
3H Summer School program serves as an experimental and cross-disciplinary design
laboratory connecting core human values, design theory, ideation and on-site build-
ing application around the selected lead theme Unity & Diversity; Building for Cul-
tural Encounters. The aim is to train a new generation of environmental and socially

At the AGP Summer School 2015, Unity & Diversity; Building for Cultural Encoun-
ters typologies of African architecture and fuilding forms and their adaptation for
the Auroville context will be explored. Participants will evaluate an existing design
and then engage in the hands-on construction of a structure that allows the celebra-
tion of African cultures. Locally available, low-cost materials and innovative building
technologies will be used for the construction. A design exercise, with model mak-
ing, on building a small home that expresses the cultural genius of African cultures
will conducted in this program. One of the design propositions will be constructed

after the program closure and will complement the community gathering
spaces. The program guides participants through an entire project cycle
i.e. ideation, design, implementation documentation.

TOPICS
Besides designing and building structures of African building typologies, students
will get exposure to the following subjects: transformative leadership principles, sys-
tem thinking, , climate responsive design, vernacular architecture, earth as building
material, biological waste water treatment, sustainable water management, ecologi-
cal landscaping, renewable energy systems and energy efficiency, ecological sanita-
tion, urban agriculture, organic farming, social entrepreneurship, sustainable waste
management, alternative education, , project planning and management.
PARTICIPANTS
We invite students and young professionals from, but not limited to, the following
professions: architecture, interior design, product design, engineering etc. All partici-
pants must commit to participating in all the program components. Active and enthu-
siastic participation is essential for the success of this program

APPROACH
The program is designed and based on the 3H (hands, head and heart)
approach, which attempts to actualize participants’ inner strength, to acti-
vate critical system thinking and to work on students’ technical capacities
of designing and implementing projects. Besides working on the design,
implementation and documentation, each participating student will design
and write a project of his/her choice, which aims at bringing environmental
and social justice and wellbeing.

FACILITATORS
Fabian Ostner
Fabian studied architecture at the University of Applied Sciences at
Bremen, Germany (from where he graduated in 1997 as architect)
and at the School of Arts Berlin-Weissensee. He has been working
in Berlin, Mumbai, Bangalore and Auroville. In 2004 he started his
own architecture studio which today is called White Ants Studio. His
studio handles projects ranging from interior design, residential and
commercial architecture to conceptualisation of institutional and cul-
tural projects.
Martin Scherfler
Martin Scherfler is a co-founder of Auroville Consulting. A sociolo-
gist and researcher, he has wide experience coordinating educational
workshops in areas of sustainability. He is currently engaged in pro-
ject management of integrated campus development and renewable
energy research studies. He holds a Master degree in Sociology from
Austria.
Tahir Kadir
Kadir is from Ethiopia, he came to Auroville in 2012, he a member of
the African Pavilion Group at Auroville. Since then he has engage in
ecological construction using bamboo material, earth and other local
building materials. Since 2013 Tahir has been working as project co-
ordinator on the Sacred Grove ecological building project at Auroville.
Eric Ntakirutimana
Eric is originally from Ruanda, he holds a bachelor degree in econo-
my. Eric trained with the Auroville Earth Institute in earthen building
technologies and has bee working on Sacred Grove ecological build-
ing project at Auroville. He currently works on dismountable building
structures. He is a member of the African Pavilion Group and sup-
ports the work of the Unity Pavilion.

FACILITATORS
Iraguha Yves
Iraguha is from Ruanda and has been a member of the African Pa-
vilion Group since 2010. He holds a master degree in environmental
economics from Anamalai University, Chidambaram. He currently
works at the Auroville Earth Institute on earth architecture and tech-
nologies. He is interested in ecological building technologies and
sustainable living.
Balu Ramalingam
Balu is an event organizer with a main focus on organizing educa-
tional events that promote sustainable development and human well-
being He holds Master in Business Administration.
Vimal Bhojraj
Vimal is a communication specialist with a passion for photography,
video production and design. He was engaged in several social re-
sponsibility projects for over 7 years developing branding and mar-
keting communications material. He has a diploma in Fashion Tech-
nology from NIFT-TEA. He has recenlty published a book ‘Creative
Expressions from Auroville’, a visually rich book of inspiring art and
crafts.

Registration fee Rs. 40,500 per person (USD 720 /Euro 680)

Cancellation
