PROGRAM
Auroville Green Practices (AGP) 3H Summer School program is an initiative using
Auroville and its outstanding experience in sustainable living and cultural diversity as
a platform for learning and personal growth for students from around the world. The
3H Summer School program serves as an experimental and cross-disciplinary design
laboratory connecting core human values, design theory, ideation and on-site build-
ing application around the selected lead theme Unity & Diversity; Building for Cul-
tural Encounters. The aim is to train a new generation of environmental and socially
responsible leaders that are capable of connecting hands (capacity), head (system
thinking) and heart (personal strength) while working on system change for a more
socially and environmentally just future.
At the AGP Summer School 2015, Unity & Diversity; Building for Cultural Encoun-
ters typologies of African architecture and fuilding forms and their adaptation for
the Auroville context will be explored. Participants will evaluate an existing design
and then engage in the hands-on construction of a structure that allows the celebra-
tion of African cultures. Locally available, low-cost materials and innovative building
technologies will be used for the construction. A design exercise, with model mak-
ing, on building a small home that expresses the cultural genius of African cultures
will conducted in this program. One of the design propositions will be constructed
