2. The oil and gas industry in India: Facts
• The first oil deposits in India were discovered in 1889 near the town of [Digboi] in the state of Assam
• In 1959 Oil India Limited and other petroleum companies were nationalized and the sector was taken over and run by the government till 1991
• Since liberalization in the 90s the government has taken slowly opened the sector to private players in terms of exploration and distribution
• India will overtake Japan to become the world’s third largest oil consumer behind the US and China by 2025.
• From 2009 to 2013, India’s primary energy consumption increased at a CAGR of 5.3%, while global consumption rose at a CAGR of 3%.
• India’s oil and gas consumption is much lower as compared to other countries. In 2013, India’s per capita consumption of oil and gas was 176.9 Kg of oil
equivalent (kgoe), while the global average was 1,011.4 kgoe.
