World Environment Day (WED) occurs on 5 June every
year, is the United Nationโs principal vehicle for
encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the
protection of our environment . First held in 1974,
it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness
on emerging environmental issues from marine
pollution and global warming, to sustainable
consumption and wildlife crime. WORLD
ENVIRONMENT DAY has grown to become a global
platform for public outreach, with participation from
over 143 countries annually. Each year, WED has a
new theme that major corporations, NGOs,
communities, governments and celebrities worldwide
adopt to advocate environmental causes.

Walk or bike instead of driving a car.
Cars and trucks run on fossil fuels,
which release carbon dioxide into
the atmosphere. In the United
States, automobiles produce over
20 percent of total carbon
emissions. Walk or bike and youโll
save one pound of carbon for every
mile you travel.

Trees absorb carbon dioxide from
the air and use it as their energy
source, producing oxygen for us to
breathe. A tree in the temperate

that shades a house can reduce
the energy required to run the air
conditioner and save an additional
200 to 2,000 pounds of carbon
