  2. Sri Aurobindo Ghosh (1872-1950)
  3. Biography  Aurobindo Ghosh was born on 15th august 1872 in Calcutta (Kolkata)  He has later conferred the title of Sri, when in England  He did his schooling at Loreto House, Darjeeling., St.Pauls school London. And he went to King’s college in England.  After having done his ICS in England, he returned to India when he did administrative posts.  He also became an eminent political activist  Aurobindo Ghosh dedicatedly contributed to India’s freedom from British rule during the early part of his life.  In his later years his political ideology changed to a spiritual one  In Pondicherry he founded a community of spiritual seekers, called The Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 1926
  4.  His later life was placed with the learning and teaching about subjects concerning Philosophy and Spirituality  Sri Aurobindo Ghosh was also incredibly involved in Yoga and Yogic teachings  Sri Aurobindo left his body on 5 December 1950
  5. Major Works  The evolutionary philosophy underlying Aurobindo’s integral yoga is explored in his main prose work The Life Divine(1939)  In addition to The Life Divine, his major works include;  Essays on The Gita(1922)  Collected poems and plays(1942)  The Synthesis of Yoga(1948)  The Human Cycle(1949)  The ideal of Human Unity(1949)  Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol(1950)  On the Veda(1956)  Record of Yoga  Isha Upanishad, The Secrets of the Vedas , etc......
  6. Contribution to Education  According to him three things have be considered in true and living education 1. The man/individual 2. The Nation 3. Humanity  According to Aurobindo Ghosh a true education not only spiritual but also rational, vital, physical and intellectual in nature he named it as Integral Education.
  7.  Integral Education: Education is integral in the sense of being an education not only for the evolution of the individual alone but also for the nation and the humanity. It is bringing out all the facets of personality.  Integral Education includes five concepts 1. Physical Education 2. Vital Education 3. Mental Education 4. Psychic Education 5. Spiritual Education
  8. Physical Education: Is the education of the body or the harmonious development of all parts of the body and rectification of defects and deformities, if any. Vital Education: consist of two aspects 1. Sense Training 2. Development of Character Mental Education: Education for the mind Psychic Education: developing innate powers through psychological, religious or mechanical methods Spiritual Education: Education for our soul According to Aurobindo Ghosh education should be child centered. It should be based on the needs and interests of the children
  9. Aims of Education  Acquiring new knowledge in the field of literature, science, culture, politics etc..  For physical development  For sense training  Development of innate powers  Spiritualisation of society  Development of morality  Self realisation
  10.  Curriculum: According to Aurobindo Ghosh curriculum should include Academic subjects, Vocational training, Cultural activities and education should be given for internation understanding and for proper health maintenance  Methods of Teaching: Education should be given based on 3A’s  Age, Ability, Aptitude  Learning through cooperative activities  Learning through self experience  Learning by doing  He emphasis Montessori method for infant classes  In teaching learning programme the principle of going from known to unknown and near to far should be followed
  11.  Role of the teacher: A teacher should be like torch- light  Teacher is a guide not a master  The role of a teacher is to suggest and not to impose  A true teacher removes the clouds of ignorance  Medium of instruction: mother tongue along with that foreign languages should be taught
