The Seven Star Park
The site location, contains a lot of trees.
The seven star park can be considered
as a small forest. Some of those trees
are marked as valuable by means of size
or species. Some groups of trees create
a certain kind of atmosphere which can
be experienced as pleasant. Therefore
we would keep certain groups of trees
and let them interact with the new build-
ing environment and enchance the public
spaces.

3. At the moment, the site is not a vacant land,
but part of the seven star park. There are a
few elements in the area, which are valuable
for the park. Also the existing entrances
and the circulation needs to be respected.
Besides the trees, the site contains natural
resources, like mountains and water, which
are typical for the Guilin landscape. In terms
of view, these resources can be valuable for
restaurant development. When it comes to
retail development the view is not an issue.
Therefore other area’s who don’t have a di-
rect view to the river or the mountains, will
be more valuable for retail, as the accessi-
bility of those area’s is excellent.
4. Creating a third generation (commercial) park, which means instead
of different kind of functions around the park, the park can be the
source of various activities serving the people of Guilin and its tour-
ists. To provide a vivid and high quality environment, where family life
becomes the main theme, and different kind of people can take use
of leisure activities of Guilin. To revitalize the park by means of mak-
ing it one of the most important places in Guilin, by introducing new
functions and activities (city branding). To create a commercial area
which can attract tourists, but also (big brand) companies to settle
in Guilin.

With a facade of glass panels,
in different tones of green, re-
flecting the surroundings, and
therefore totally adapted to its
environment. The both sides are
shaped as terraces, which give

8. The Guilin Mountains
The Guilin scenery is famous for its
mountains popping out of the land-
scape in the most interesting shapes.
Through millions of years these moun-
tains were formed as a result of the
abundance of rainfall in that area,
which causes the relatively soft lime
stone to erode as minerals are easy
to dissolve in the acid rainwater. The
mountains shaped by this phenomenon
makes this landscape unique, as it
looks like all these mountains separat-
ed. The shapes tend to look odd, espe-
cially as the mountain slopes are very
steep, almost vertical. The mountains, the
rivers, the trees and the sky, Guilin brings
all these elements together in a landscape
which can’t be found anywhere else in the
world. Therefore it makes a lot of sense
that this landscape should be a source of
inspiration for the architecture in the area.

Through all the years, the vestibule has de-
served an important position in the church
of ‘Tuindorp’, but has become outdated. The
current space is not sufficient to fulfil the
needs of the different kind of functions. Af-
ter counselling the commission of interior
affairs, the first plans has been developed.
Not only the extension of space was an im-
portant issue, also daylight an how to imple-
ment a contemporary design into a classi-
cal church. The original symmetry has been
restored, and emphasized by the colourful
glass panels. Together with the other col-
ourful materials, the amount of light and
plenty of space to fit the new program, the
vestibule now has a modern character and
can be function for decades again. It will
always be an important place in the church,
a place to experience, to believe and meet
other people.

13. The directive of this project was
Creating a flexible, residential tow-
er house in the dockland district of
‘houthavens’ in Amsterdam, which is
developing as a land reclamation
for the purpose of creating more
living space. The tower house is suit-
able for handicapped residents and
contains multiple facilities to fulfil
their needs. The plans are based on
a footprint of 10x10m, but splitted
and reshaped as an interesting vol-
ume, rather than a standard tower
composition. The shape is opening
up to let the surrounding water get
inside. The additional advantage is
that multiple views are being gener-
ated to the water. Balconies are not
blocking the view, but situated in
the gap. Standing with your hands
on the railing, your hair in the
wind, watching other ships passing
by, make you experience all the ele-
ments of the Amsterdam harbour.
