OUR COMPANY
Our company was established in 1981 as an experienced consulting bureau of
structural engineers. Aristidis Karanikolaou is the managing director and owner
of the company.
HUMAN RESOURCES
Mr. Aristidis Karanikolaou, born 1959 in Athens-Greece, with an experience of
over 30 years in structural design of buildings in seismic regions, has made his
secondary education between 1970-1976 at the German School of Athens and his
Degree in Civil Engineering specialized in Structural Engineering at the
National Technical University of Athens between 1976-1981. During the period
1987-1996 he has been working in Freising, Germany at the company of
structural engineers W.Brandl.
Mrs. Vasiliki Siormpa, born in 1986 in Larissa-Greece. She has made her
secondary education between 1998-2004 in Larissa. She obtained the Diploma
in Civil Engineering and the Master degree in Analysis and Design of
Earthquake Resistant Structures at the National Technical University of Athens
between 2004-2011.

• SOFISTIK: 3D finite element analysis of even the most complex
structures in Building construction and Industrial engineering, under any

according to Eurocodes and many international standards (eg. DIN ,

PROJECT 1 STATIC , DYNAMIC ANALYSIS AND STRENGTHENING OF AN EXISTING
4-STOREY BUILDING IN VIRONAS , ATHENS , GREECE

Description of the project: The existing building has a 1.360,00 m2
total coverage
and consists of one underground floor, ground floor, 1st
, 2nd
, 3rd
floor and roof
floor. The existing building has been designed in 1998 according to that time
current standards. An additional storey made of steel beams will be added
between the ground floor and the 1st
floor.
Current status: The building operates as a social care center, the ground floor will
be converted into a supermarket and an additional storey will be built at +3.20
m. This storey will be seated on the existing concrete structure via main HEB 140
and ancillary IPE 100 metallic girders.
Strengthening methods: Structural analysis and strengthening study have been
performed according to the current Greek Standards. Due to the loads of the
additional storey and the insufficient stiffness along the transverse direction of
the building, strengthening with a jacket of reinforced concrete is suggested in a
shear wall along the transverse direction.

Project description: The new building of Paros Airport consists of the main
terminal building in two floors (Ground floor and 1st
floor) and the firefighting
materials warehouse with a load bearing structure of reinforced concrete. A steel
structure will be added between the main building and the warehouse. The total
constructions covering area is of approximately 1.300,00 m2
.
The structural design includes calculations , drawings of the load bearing
structure, drawings of the reinforcement bars and details of all structural
elements (slabs, beams, columns, shear walls and foundation) and drawings of
the steel members.

PROJECT 3 PRODUCTION HALL AND OFFICE BUILDING IN BALTRINGEN -
MIETINGEN , GERMANY

Description of the Project: The production hall is a rectangle building with 42,00
m length , 40,00 m width and double-inclined roof, with 8,60 m maximum height
.It is constructed with frames of glued laminated timber seated on steel columns.
Behind the production hall a two-storey office building of a 520,00 m2
total
coverage will be added. Its load bearing structure consists of a timber roof,
masonry walls , slabs and foundation members , which are made of reinforced
concrete.

Description of the project: It is a two storey building, with double-inclined roof,

PROJECT 6 CHURCH ABOVE THE CAVES ON THE ISLAND OF MILOS, GREECE

Description of the project: The ground plan of the church is formed by a
semicircular, arched construction, intersected in the middle by the temple. A
water reservoir for fire protection is installed under the main structure.
Due to the requirement of load-minimization because of the existing caves in the
underground of the church, a steel structural system with bolt connections is
chosen.

PROJECT 8 STRUCTURAL DESIGN AND SUPERVISION FOR RESTORATIONS AND
STRENGTHENING AT THE BELLTOWER OF THE CHURCH OF AG. GEORGIOS IN ATSIKI,

Description of the project: The belltower of the Church of Ag. Georgios is a 3-
storey (ground, first and second floor) existing stone structure with reinforced
concrete slabs and dome, built in 1928. The structure is 17,60 m high and has a
6,00 m x 6,00 m surface coverage. Corrosion of the steel load-bearing elements
is the main structural defect.
Restoration and strengthening methods: Removal of the first and second floor
slabs (reinforced concrete between steel sections) using undisturbed cutting
methods and replacement with new ones with concrete and stainless bars.
Homogenization and strengthening of the masonry walls. Due to the corrosion of
the steel bars of the dome , the existing dome is removed with undisturbed
cutting methods and a new dome with stainless frames is constructed with the
equal shape as the origin.

Description of the project: The existing main building (215,00 m2
of plan surface)
consists of underground floor, ground floor, first floor and wooden roof. On the
north view of the building there is a “loggia”, with load bearing marble members.
Main Pathology: Cracks in the load bearing masonry, insufficient cross sections in
the members of the wooden roof and the wooden floor beams, corrosion of the
metal bars , which connect the marble sections of the loggia’s columns.
Restoration and strengthening methods: Homogenization, single-sided
strengthening of the masonry walls. Replacement of the existing wooden roof
with a new one. Strengthening of the wooden floor beams with steel plates.
Gradual degradation of the loggia’s marble parts and extraction of the oxidized
metal bars. Repair or replacement of the marble sections . Replacement of the
oxidized metal bars with stainless steel ones of high strength.

Description of the project: The main building consists of four levels (A, B, C, D)
with external dimensions 51,60 m x 29,10 m and 12,65 m height between the
ground of level A and the roof of level D.
Main Pathology: A part of the building has settlements and cracks. Geotechnical
research has been proposed to the Prefecture, due to the foundation being placed
above a large slope. The drillings showed fill material of large thickness (4,50 m -
15,00 m) under the surface of the foundation.
Restoration and strengthening methods: Restoration and strengthening studies
suggest a solution with micro-piles, in order to transfer the loads into the safe
ground under the fills. Micro-Piles of 25 cm diameter are infixed in a 3.0 m depth
inside the safe ground under the fills. The whole strengthening of the foundation
is combined with reinforced beams and foundation slab.

NATIONAL THEATER OF ATHENS, GREECE

Description of the project: The National Theater, originally designed by Architect
Ernst Ziller (1891-1901), is a listed building. The vertical structure of the Theater
consists mainly of masonry and reinforced concrete. Small masonry vaults
supported on steel sections and concrete elements form the floors of the building.
Main Pathology: The main defects of the structure had been located on the north
side of the building, resulted by the former extraction of high walls behind the
Central Stage and on the masonries of the upper floors which had been cracked
due to tensile stresses.
Restoration and strengthening methods: Homogenization, single-sided
strengthening of the listed masonry walls.
Design period: August 2001-December 2001

Aristidis Karanikolaou is the managing director and owner of the company. HUMAN RESOURCES Mr. Aristidis Karanikolaou, born 1959 in Athens-Greece, with an experience of over 30 years in structural design of buildings in seismic regions, has made his secondary education between 1970-1976 at the German School of Athens and his Degree in Civil Engineering specialized in Structural Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens between 1976-1981. During the period 1987-1996 he has been working in Freising, Germany at the company of structural engineers W.Brandl. Mrs. Vasiliki Siormpa, born in 1986 in Larissa-Greece. She has made her secondary education between 1998-2004 in Larissa. She obtained the Diploma in Civil Engineering and the Master degree in Analysis and Design of Earthquake Resistant Structures at the National Technical University of Athens between 2004-2011. SERVICES Our basic activity is the design, supervision and management of Civil Engineering Projects in the public and private sector. The existing building has been designed in 1998 according to that time current standards. An additional storey made of steel beams will be added between the ground floor and the 1st floor. Current status: The building operates as a social care center, the ground floor will be converted into a supermarket and an additional storey will be built at +3.20 m. This storey will be seated on the existing concrete structure via main HEB 140 and ancillary IPE 100 metallic girders. Strengthening methods: Structural analysis and strengthening study have been performed according to the current Greek Standards. Due to the loads of the additional storey and the insufficient stiffness along the transverse direction of the building, strengthening with a jacket of reinforced concrete is suggested in a shear wall along the transverse direction. A steel structure will be added between the main building and the warehouse. The total constructions covering area is of approximately 1.300,00 m2 . Behind the production hall a two-storey office building of a 520,00 m2 total coverage will be added. Its load bearing structure consists of a timber roof, masonry walls , slabs and foundation members , which are made of reinforced concrete. Design period: July 2014-September 2014

A water reservoir for fire protection is installed under the main structure. GEORGIOS IN ATSIKI, ISLAND OF LIMNOS, GREECE Client: Ag. Georgios Church, Atsiki, Limnos Architectural design: Evangelos Kounenis, Architect Structural design: Aristidis Karanikolaou, Civil Engineer Grigorios Tsirikos, Civil Engineer Description of the project: The belltower of the Church of Ag. Georgios is a 3- storey (ground, first and second floor) existing stone structure with reinforced concrete slabs and dome, built in 1928. The structure is 17,60 m high and has a 6,00 m x 6,00 m surface coverage. Corrosion of the steel load-bearing elements is the main structural defect. Restoration and strengthening methods: Removal of the first and second floor slabs (reinforced concrete between steel sections) using undisturbed cutting methods and replacement with new ones with concrete and stainless bars. Homogenization and strengthening of the masonry walls. Due to the corrosion of the steel bars of the dome , the existing dome is removed with undisturbed cutting methods and a new dome with stainless frames is constructed with the equal shape as the origin. On the north view of the building there is a “loggia”, with load bearing marble members. Main Pathology: Cracks in the load bearing masonry, insufficient cross sections in the members of the wooden roof and the wooden floor beams, corrosion of the metal bars , which connect the marble sections of the loggia’s columns. Restoration and strengthening methods: Homogenization, single-sided strengthening of the masonry walls. Replacement of the existing wooden roof with a new one. Strengthening of the wooden floor beams with steel plates. Gradual degradation of the loggia’s marble parts and extraction of the oxidized metal bars. Repair or replacement of the marble sections . Replacement of the oxidized metal bars with stainless steel ones of high strength. Design period: November 2008-December 2008

Main Pathology: A part of the building has settlements and cracks. Geotechnical research has been proposed to the Prefecture, due to the foundation being placed above a large slope. The drillings showed fill material of large thickness (4,50 m - 15,00 m) under the surface of the foundation. Restoration and strengthening methods: Restoration and strengthening studies suggest a solution with micro-piles, in order to transfer the loads into the safe ground under the fills. Micro-Piles of 25 cm diameter are infixed in a 3.0 m depth inside the safe ground under the fills. The whole strengthening of the foundation is combined with reinforced beams and foundation slab. Design period: July 2001-December 2002

The vertical structure of the Theater consists mainly of masonry and reinforced concrete. Small masonry vaults supported on steel sections and concrete elements form the floors of the building. Main Pathology: The main defects of the structure had been located on the north side of the building, resulted by the former extraction of high walls behind the Central Stage and on the masonries of the upper floors which had been cracked due to tensile stresses. Restoration and strengthening methods: Homogenization, single-sided strengthening of the listed masonry walls. Design period: August 2001-December 2001
