3. Consequences of deforestation
With increasing industrialization and due to overpopulation,
the need for building material, paper , furniture, clothing has
increased considerably , resulting in increased felling of trees .
Large areas under forests are also cleared to create space for
housing, agriculture , and industries .These activities cause a
serious threat to environment.
5. Change in physical properties of soil
● Trees bind the soil to ground . When the cover is
removed from the soil , soil erosion increases . The
top soil gets washed away easily by wind or water
and soil losses its fertility . Over a period of time ,
the land becomes barren , this is called
Desertification .
6. .”Reduced Rainfall
With a reduction in plant life the
water cycle gets disrupted . The
area receives lesser and lesser
rainfall , upsetting the natural
balance of the environment .
7. Imbalance of atmospheric gasses
Carbon dioxide released by the process
of respiration by plants and animals , is
taken by plants and is used for
photosynthesis , which in turn releases
oxygen . Deforestation causes an
imbalance in the atmosphere , with
increased concentration of carbon
dioxide .
8. Changes in climate
The increase in carbon dioxide
concentration leads to increased
temperature , known as greenhouse
effect resulting in global warming .
Wide scale climatic changes have been
reported by scientists , causing
worldwide concern .
9. Natural calamities
● Soil erosion makes the land dry and brittle ,
making it more prone to landslides . When rain
water doesn’t get absorbed situations like flood
may also occur
10. Scarcity of products
● We have become so used to having a variety of
products which use wood or plant products , that we
do not realise that , soon there will be shortage of
products . Alternatives should be found before the
condition becomes severe .
11. Degradation of habitats
● The forests provide a habitat for millions of
organisms , birds and animals . A loss of
flora results in a direct effect on the fauna
of the area , as they are dependent on each
other .
