Single camera productions
1. Single camera productions
Introduction
A single camera setup or the single camera mode of production is a method of film making
and video production. In this setup, each of the various shots and camera angles are taken
using the same camera, or multiple cameras pointed in one direction, which are moved and
reset to get each shot or new angle. Unlike film producers, who almost always opt for the
single-camera technique, television producers make a distinct decision to shoot in either
single-camera or multiple-camera mode.
The single-camera setup originally developed during the birth of the classical Hollywood
cinema in the 1910s and has remained the standard mode of production for cinema; in
television, both single cameras and multiple-camera productions are common.
Multi-camera set-up which uses two or more cameras running simultaneously.
Different British films use single camera techniques such as action films will use three or
more cameras to capture multiple angles, as action scenes have a lot going on during them
and take a great deal of time for only seconds to a few minutes of footage.
Example 1:
Advantagesof singlecameratechniques.
~ One of the advantages of single camera use is it is cheaper. If more cameras were
used, each camera man would cost money and lighting and sound units. With
multiple cameras running, the costs increase.
~ There is more aesthetic control over the lighting and sound for each shot, it also
enhances the detail and excitement.
~ You wouldn’t need both actors on set at the same time; film the shots for one whilst
the other is in their trailer and vice versa.
~ When filming you aren't limited in how much space you need to set up your shot.
2. ~ Directors have more control over each shot, whereas with multiple cameras there
would be someone responsible for that camera.
Disadvantageof singlecamera techniques.
~ One disadvantage of sct is It takes longer to set up because of all the cameras and
camera men.
~ Less realistic reactions; as one actor gets filmed at a time, the reactions aren't as
natural as it would be with multi camera productions.
~ Repeating the same shot 3 times to get each angle as you can only get one at a time,
however use of multiple cameras you're able to capture everything at once.
~ You'll be spending a lot of time in the editing suit because of all the shots that have
been taken. With multiple cameras, you could shoot different angles and takes at the
same time, using different people for the cameras.
~ One final disadvantage is that you will be spending more time in the editing room
because you would have to edit every clip and angle together.
Theshining (1980)
the shining steady cam clip
in this particular clip it is filmed with a steady cam which is following a boy around the hotel.
We see that the camera is following the boy at the level of his trike whilst he is riding it
around the hotel in addition to this the multiple corners in the hotel that the boy is driving
round creates suspense and an unsettling feeling for the audience. The camera travels
smoothly throughout the scene which allows the audience to travel with him. Later into the
scene we see the boy get off his trike with this the camera is in a stationary angle which gives
a clean and steady shot. The camera then cuts to a low angle and starts rolling through his
eyes so it makes the audience feel like they are in the situation the boy is in. in the final parts
of the scene we see the camera pin its focus on the door number that the boy has stopped
at. we see the camera linger on the room door which creates tension between the audience
and make them think that something is wrong with that room. The camera moves back to a
tripod which is the same height as the boy which puts the audience in the shoes of him. The
height of the shot rises when the boy stands up, it creates tension as he starts to walk toward
the door because we as an audience feel as if something may happen to him.
Bad romance (2008)
bad romance
Bad romance by lady gaga, uses a single camera production to show the audience what is
happening within the video which shows it clearly. Using this technique to record the music
video allows the directors to clearly show the audience what they want them to see with
there are no limitations where the camera was placed. A tri-pod is what is mainly used for
the full video to show the audience every aspect of the scene and not leave the audience
curious as to why only certain parts of a shot was shown. Considering the director has the
ability to show everything in a scene they also have the ability to hide things. Within the
3. video the camera sows a long shot of one of the backing dancers who is crouched down in an
awkward position also with the camera at their eye level which creates tension towards the
audience this is common in a lady gaga video because they were known to be quite explicit
at the peak of her career and not many videos have a plot or story line like hers.
JohnLewisChristmasadvert2015
john lewis advert
At the start of the clip we see the camera is focusing on a little girl who looks sad. This is shot
clearly with the camera at eye level, it makes the audience feel for the girl and they wonder
what she’s sad about. It then switches focus to the camera through a telescope which lets us
see what she is seeing and the way she sees it. The camera zooms in s far into to the moon
where the little girl sees a man walking out of a shed. One scene in the advert focuses on a
long shot of the man which shows in his view of how far he is away from earth, this makes
the audience feel sad for the man and that he is alone with no one for Christmas. This makes
the girl feel happy and excited. Further into the clip we see the girl try her hardest to get a
message to the man on the moon, this part of the clip directs itself to children as it focuses
on a childhood story of a man being on the moon, this could make the children feel happy
just as it did for the little girl. In the final moments of the advert we see the old man receive a
gift tied to lots of balloons which is from the little girl, this makes the man feel happy and
gives a positive affect to the audience. When the man finds out the gift is a telescope he
looks through it which then the camera shows what he sees, the man finds the girl who is
also looking through her telescope which gives a glimpse of hope for the audience and makes
both main characters in the film happy. In the end of the clip a text comes on the screen
which says ‘’show someone they’re loved this Christmas’’ this mirrors a positive affect on the
audience and educates young people to help people.
