• The most well-known example is
Wikipedia.
• Wikis are a way to grow a knowledge
base around a particular content area,
be it best practices in a particular field
or how to use a specific piece of software.

they have created.
• A key element of the technology is that it allows people to

require any web design or publishing skills to participate,
making it easy for people to create and publish or
communicate their work to the world.

University (Charles Knight)
• This article discusses the use of Wikipedia by academics
and students for learning and teaching activities at
Liverpool Hope University, one of the British University
• They examined existing research on Wikipedia use amongst
students and academics.
• Within the academic group of 133, 74% indicated that they
used Wikipedia for some purpose, be it learning and
teaching. Only 8% have edited pages at some time and 1%
on a regular basis and rest don’t prefer
• Out of1222 students, their principal findings were
– 75% of students use Wikipedia
– student use is typically confined to the initial stages of
assignments and projects
