HKFBS 2015
There is a famous quote from Walt Disney ---“If you can dream it,
you can do it.”Coming to the 31st year of HKFBS, the aspiration
for our members to become successful figures in the business field
has never been stronger. Therefore, Hong Kong Federation of
Business Students has been striking to provide a platform for our
members to dream and achieve. To continue the legacy, Hong
Kong Outstanding Business Students Award (HKOBSA) was
therefore established. With the successful achievement in last
two years, we encounter greater expectations. As the Project
Directors of the HKOBSA 2015, we give our very best in gaining
recognition and support for this competition.
This year’s slogan, “Distinguish from the Crowds”, is set to remind our members that they should take the
initiative to stand out and outperform others. The business industry is never lacking of talents as you may
see from loads of undergraduates studying business related course in universities. Hence, what allows you
to differentiate would be attitude, a brave step forward could possibly alter the condition. Bear in mind,
the chance is always in our hand, it is either you grab it or let it slip away. It is ourselves to choose to be a
follower, or a leader.
To be entitled the Hong Kong Outstanding Business Students, standing in front of you at this Grand
Finale today is never an easy path. Our candidates have gone through rounds and rounds of assessment,
which were targeting various attributes. From the Interview Sessions, which require analytical, presentation
and collaboration skills, to Promotion Challenge that showcases their creativity and marketing skills. We
sincerely hope that in such a competitive business environment nowadays, on top of learning techniques
to help pave their way to success, I sincerely hope this Award would shape them into a more all-rounded
person.
HKOBSA should not only be treated as a contest, but also a precious experience for our members to
learn and grow. While we prepare for the Award, we think in different perspectives to benefit not only the
candidates, but as many of our members as possible. Thus, a new element is added to the Youth Business
Elites Forum---The Elites Summit. Several business professionals are invited to be the guests speakers, they
will share their valuable opinions on a current business issue to the audience.Their priceless sharing would
add so much color to the Forum.
Nevertheless,we are exceptionally grateful to have the support from Ageas, ourTitle Sponsor, for supporting
this remarkable event in uncountable ways. We would like to take this chance to thank all sponsors,
supporting parties, faculties and the Evaluation Committee, for significant contribution. Thanks must also
be given to our members, who have shown their support to the event.
Last but not least, we sincerely hope that HKOBSA could continue benefit university students in a
sustainable manner.

DISTINGUISH FROM THE CROWDS
Hong Kong Federation of Business Students, HKFBS, is a non-profit organization
managed by local business undergraduates, with more than 15,000 members from
the 9 local universities. We are the only organization, which includes the widest
spectrum of local students from the business field.
HKFBS was founded in January 1985.We represent all local business undergraduates,
andservethembyfosteringtheirfriendship,co-ordinationandmutualunderstanding.
We endeavor to assist them in becoming prominent figures in business with sound
academic knowledge, excellent managerial skills, as well as helping them gain an
understanding of the real business environment.
About HKOBSA 2015
Hong Kong Outstanding Business Students Award 2015 (HKOBSA 2015) is the first formal recognition
of eminent business undergraduates from the 9 local universities held by HKFBS. HKOBSA 2015 marks a
new epoch in academy, for it provides a brand new platform for business undergraduates to recognise their
abilities and to foster the exchange of business ideas among the participants.
HKOBSA 2015 consists of two assessment stages, namely the First-round Interview, the Second-round
Interview, Promotion Challenge and the Youth Business Elites Forum. The whole assessment process will
be conducted by the Evaluation Committee panels, which are elites from Academic Field and Business
Field. The most excellent candidate from each university will be awarded the Hong Kong Outstanding
Business Students Award and they will be promoted to the aforementioned final stage to further compete
for the overall championship, the first runner-up and the second runner-up.
HKOBSA 2015 provides an invaluable chance:
• To give formal recognition to remarkable business undergraduates
• To explore students’ potential and identify young business elites
• To facilitate interactions and exchange of opinions among business undergraduates
• To advocate business undergraduates to participate in diversified activities
• To enhance the public awareness of the development of business education

HKFBS 2015
During the individual preparation part, it demonstrated the
individual’s analytical skills and ability to think independently
and critically under a time limit. During the group discussion,
each candidate had the chance of demonstrating their individual
knowledge, as well as how well they can cooperate in a team, or
even, lead the team. Our Evaluation Committees reflected that it is
important for the students to realize that although this was a team
challenge, the students that shined were the ones who took extra
initiatives and held the role as a leader, to perform constructive discussion. The judges particularly observed
each candidate’s contribution to discussion, leadership, time management, and ability to cooperate in a team.
Albeit most teams agreed on an equal distribution of presentation time, our judges reflected that the most
outstanding students grasped the mere few minutes they had to bring out their strongest point in concise
and precise words. These students, were often the ones who answered their challenging questions to follow
up on their presentation. These students were then chosen to enter into the semi-final, Second Round
Interviews.
First-Round Interview
The First Round of HKOBSA2015 was successfully carried out on the
21st March 2015.
Asthegroupsof5candidatesfromeachUniversityenterthepreparation
room, they are given 30 minutes to prepare for a 20+ pages, complex
case study. After their individual comprehension and analysis on the
case, they are then allowed to have 20 minutes for discussion, under
the observation of a panel of judges, with the other 4 candidates, on
the direction and content of the presentation. Proceeding to the final
stage of the interview, each group presented their analytical ideas and
solutions to our Evaluation Committee.
Preliminary Screening
Having received strong, diversified, and ambitious applications from
all 9 local Universities in Hong Kong, we invited Academic Elites
to make the vital decision as to assessing eligible and outstanding
candidates for our First Round Interviews. The screening process
weighted heavily on the all-roundedness of students, with special
attention drawn to the extra-curriculum activities, business
competitions, and internship experiences.Judges expressed that they
strongly appreciate applicants who go beyond ‘textbook knowledge’
and ‘classroom experience’.

DISTINGUISH FROM THE CROWDS
Second-Round Interview
The Second Round of HKOBSA2015 was a fruitful event, held on the
7th April 2015.
As the top two candidates from each University demonstrate their
business potentials and intelligence, our Evaluation Committee
strived to analyse, to the best of their professionalism, the quality and
excellence of the presentations given by the semi-finalists.
With a mere 10 minutes, how in depth can a business undergraduate analyse and present an outstanding
business solution for a hypothetical crisis encountered by well-known companies? All of the semi-finalists
showed excellent business sense, innovative ideas, as well as blooming confidence, with a few candidates
being relatively more outstanding, and therefore making it to the Final Round. On top of their individual
presentation skills, the Second Round aims to challenge the candidates’ mindset on tackling problems as
well. The inclusion of a Q&A session based on their past experience and business knowledge between our
Evaluation Committee and the applicant can precisely test their ability to react to challenges and problems
on the spot, and come up with an optimum answer within seconds. It
also revealed,to the panel, the applicants’mindset and clarity of thought.
The criteria for assessing the performance of the candidates emphasized
not only on business analysis, but also on their communication skills,
creativity, social & environmental concerns, demonstrated during the
Individual Questions time. The highest scoring candidate from each
University enters into the Final stage of HKOBSA2015.
Promotion Challenge
The finalists also had to take up the Promotion Challenge, where
they had to design a video for Ageas to be uploaded on HKFBS’s
Facebook page. The number of likes received by each candidate will
respectively add bonus points to their score,to be carried in the Final
Round. This year, Ageas chose “儲蓄財富 成就黃金盛世” as the
theme for the students to design.
The winner of this year’s Promotion Challenge is Chan Ip Hing from
the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, who collects
over 660 likes!

Venture the Future
In current years, the government has been stressing on the importance on young entrepreneurship in terms of
future development of Hong Kong. To remain Hong Kong as sustainable and competitive, it is said that Hong
Kong could not simply rely on working for foreign firms. Instead, we need more start-up business contributing
to various sectors of Hong Kong.
“Global development is entering a phase where entrepreneurship will increasingly play a more important role.
There are at least three reasons for this, each particular to certain types of countries. Firstly, in the West, the
managed economy of the 1970s-2000s, characterized by reliance on big business and mass production, has given
way to a so-called entrepreneurial economy. Here smaller firms now more flexibly provide knowledge-driven
goods and services, and the emergence of a creative class requires a less interfering but more facilitating state.
Secondly, in the emerging countries, most notably the BRICs – Brazil, Russia, India, and China – impressive
growth has been driven by a veritable entrepreneurial revolution. The need in these economies to sustain growth
through sustainable access to resources, knowledge, markets, and low-carbon industrialization puts a premium on
innovative entrepreneurship.
Finally,in the least developed countries, where aid dependency is high, donors have been shifting the emphasis in
development cooperatio n towards private sector development. In many of these countries, including resource-
poor North African countries, populations consist of many young people who see little prospects of gaining
employment with decent wages. Promoting youth entrepreneurship here has become a vital policy objective of
many development organizations and donors.“ (Wim Naude, 2011)
So, what about Hong Kong? In the forum, we would like to discuss whether more start up ventures would be a
sustainable development for Hong Kong and its potential to be carried out based on the current support from the
public and the government.
