WHAT ARE COSMETIC CL?
A cosmetic contact lens is designed to change the
appearance of the eye. These lenses may also
correct refractive errors
They include colored contacts, fashion lenses
They are also known as decorative or costume contact
lenses
They are nearly always soft contact lenses because
rigid gas permeable contact lenses may be too small
and may move too much to cover the entire iris
Cosmetic contact lenses allows to change the eye
color and create a look that's subtle, bold or anywhere
in between
Cosmetic contact lenses are available in both
prescription and plano forms:
Prescription cosmetic contact lenses correct -
myopia (nearsightedness),
Hyperopia (farsightedness)
 astigmatism
Plano cosmetic lenses -
 are worn purely for cosmetic purposes to change
the eye color and have no lens power for vision
correction.
Most cosmetic contact lenses are designed to
mimic the natural look of the colored part of
the eye, called the iris
Since the area is made up of colorful shapes and lines,
some cosmetic color contacts feature a series of tiny
colored dots and radially arranged colored lines and
shapes to help the lenses look more natural on the
eye.
The center of the lens, the part that lies over the pupil
is clear to see through to it.
TINTS AVAILABLE
Visibility tint-
Also known as handling tint
This usually is a white or transparent, light blue or
green tint added to a lens just to help see it better
during insertion and removal.
 Visibility tints are relatively faint and do not
affect your eye color.
Cosmetic tint
They are used to enhance or change the color of
the eye
They are available in plain or in powers
They are of two types- a) transparent
b) opaque
A) Transparent tints-
These lenses transmit 70% of the light
They are available in various shades
The tint is in the form of a concentric ring, which
has a clear centre pupil
B) Opaque tint-
• They absorb or reflect all incoming light
• They are used to completely change or mask the
underlying eye color
• They have an iris pattern with a clear central
pupil
• The clear pupil is typically 5mm in diameter
Color contacts with opaque tints come in a
wide variety of colors, including hazel, green,
blue, violet, amethyst, brown and gray.
INDICATIONS FOR USE
Typically fitted in patients who want to alter the color
of their iris
Translucent, cosmetic contact lens typically serve to
enhance the natural color of the eye
Opaque contact lens totally change the color of the
iris
Opaque cosmetic contact lens may also be used in
theatrical settings to make the eyes appear more
dramatic
FITTING OF A SOFT COSMETIC
CONTACT LENS
Soft cosmetic contact lenses are generally fitted using
trial lenses with varying base curves, diameters, thickness
and color
The color of the eye should be determined compared to
the contralateral eye
If a cosmetic contact lens is to be tinted after the initial
fitting, the flattest contact lens possible should be choosen
as the tint may cause the lens to tighten a bit
HOW TO DISINFECT COSMETIC
CONTACT LENS?
There are specific criteria for each brand, and one
should follow the recommendation of the
manufacturer before choosing a method of
disinfection.
The tint may fade if hydrogen peroxide disinfecting
solution or alcohol based daily cleaning solutions are
used
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COSMETIC
CL AND PROSTHETIC CL
• A cosmetic contact lens is a tinted or painted
contact lens which is basically used to enhance
or alter the appearance of a normal eye
whereas a prosthetic contact lens is a tinted
contact lens used to improve the appearance of
a disfigured eye
HOW TO CHOOSE
• Choosing the Right Color
– The contact lens color that will suit you best
depends on numerous factors like hair color and
skin tone.
• Cosmetic contacts for light eyes.
– If you want to change your appearance but in a
more subtle way, then enhancement tint wil be
the choice as it defines the edges of the iris and
deepens the natural color.
– And if you want to experiment with a different
eye color while still looking natural, we can
choose contact lenses in gray or green, for
example, if your natural eye color is blue.
• If you want a dramatic new look that everyone
notices immediately, those with naturally light-
colored eyes and a cool complexion with blue-red
undertones might choose a warm-toned contact
lens such as light brown.
• Color contacts for dark eyes.
– Opaque colored tints are the best choice if you
have dark eyes.
– For a natural looking change, try a lighter honey
brown or hazel colored lens.
Customised cosmetic contact Lenses
Some contact lens manufacturers specialize in
creating custom color tints for both prescription and
non-prescription contact lenses.
Custom-made tints are created from a variety of
colors in varying densities.
 Customized color lenses typically are semi-
translucent, creating a natural-looking appearance.
They can even camouflage a congenital eye defect or
congenital eye defect, or mimic the appearance of a
healthy pupil.
Customised cosmetic contacts aren't just for cosmetic
reasons. Color tints are increasingly popular among
professional athletes to increase their visual
performance.
Cosmetic Contacts: What You Need
to Know
Before choosing cosmetic contacts, be mindful
of these key factor-
Although there are different-sized lenses to fit
most wearers, there will be some occasions (such
as during blinking) where the colored portion may
slide somewhat over the pupil. This creates a less-
than-natural appearance, particularly when
wearing opaque color contacts.
 Also, the size of the pupil is constantly changing to
accommodate varying light conditions — like at
night, your pupil may be larger than the clear center
of the lens. In these instances, your vision may be
affected slightly.
Are Cosmetic Contact Lenses Safe?
Yes, cosmetic contact lenses are safe — as long as
contacts are properly prescribed, used and cared for.
It's essential to visit your eye care professional for a
proper contact lens fitting. This will ensure your
cosmetic contacts are safe and comfortable and look
natural on your eye.
If you wear cosmetic contacts only on special
occasions, daily disposables are a great option.
TOPICAL MEDICATION AND COSMETIC
CONTACT LENS
Topical medications in the form of drops can be used
routinely, but a soft contact lens can be damaged by
certain topical medications.
If the patient is wearing a cosmetic contact lens, it is
best to apply the medication at least 10 minutes
before inserting the contact lens or after removing the
contact lens
COMPLICATIONS
There have been reported cases of serious corneal
ulcers and infections associated with wear of plano
cosmetic contact lenses.
 Corneal ulcers can progress rapidly, leading to
internal ocular infection if left untreated.
Uncontrolled infection can lead to corneal scarring
and vision impairment.
In extreme cases, this condition can result in
blindness and eye loss.
 Other risks associated with the use of these lenses
include conjunctivitis (an infection of the eye),
corneal swelling, allergic reactions, corneal abrasion
from poor lens fit and a reduction in vision, resulting
in interference with activities such as driving.
• NOTE- There is evidence that contact lens users who
buy their lenses through alternative supply routes
may be more susceptible to poor hygiene procedures
and to an increased risk of infection.
• A US study published found that consumers who
bought contact lenses from sources other than their
eyecare practitioner were less likely to comply with
good eyecare health practices.
• Another more recent study found that those who
purchase contact lenses via the internet or store do not
follow a number of US Food and Drug
Administration contact lens recommendations.
• Some examples of colored contact lens are-
