Development Process – New Work Items




Topics are suggested by members and non‐members as candidates for OSCRE 
standardization.  Interest Groups are used to refine & focus topic and build ‘critical‐
mass’ of support – Both for development and adoption.  




Well‐defined and supported topics are specifically scoped, a working group of OSCRE 
Members is formed and a Charter is submitted for OSCRE Board approval.

Development Process – Work in Process




During the Member Review period, the workgroup results are released to the OSCRE 
Membership for review and comment.  Prototype implementations are encouraged to 
evaluate and demonstrate the proposed Standard.  Comments are considered by the 
Workgroup and accepted revisions are incorporated.  When all revisions are complete 
the candidate Standard is approved by the Board and released to the Public.

Development Process – Updates, Profiles & Extensions




When an OSCRE Standard is released, Member and Non‐Member organizations are 
encouraged to implement it.  If the Chartering process was thorough, this should be a 
foregone conclusion for the sponsoring Membership and an obvious choice for non‐
member organizations.  OSCRE staff assist by facilitating inquiries, interpreting 
published material, and managing comments and suggestions.  Significant issues are 
documented and referred to the Workgroup for consideration in future releases.  
Updates are undertaken by the Workgroup after considering outstanding issues and 
the interests of standards implementers.  
Opportunities are identified to either Profile or Extend existing Standard specifications.  
Profiles are subsets of a specification and Extensions add capabilities to an existing 
specification.  Both Profiles and Extensions are treated as New Work, but may be 
considered desirable because they build on existing knowledge and capabilities.

Development Process – New Work Items Topics are suggested by members and non‐members as candidates for OSCRE  standardization.  Interest Groups are used to refine & focus topic and build ‘critical‐ mass’ of support – Both for development and adoption.   Well‐defined and supported topics are specifically scoped, a working group of OSCRE  Members is formed and a Charter is submitted for OSCRE Board approval.   10 ©2009 OSCRE Americas, Inc.

Development Process – Work in Process During the Member Review period, the workgroup results are released to the OSCRE  Membership for review and comment.  Prototype implementations are encouraged to  evaluate and demonstrate the proposed Standard.  Comments are considered by the  Workgroup and accepted revisions are incorporated.  When all revisions are complete  the candidate Standard is approved by the Board and released to the Public.   17 ©2009 OSCRE Americas, Inc.

Development Process – Updates, Profiles & Extensions When an OSCRE Standard is released, Member and Non‐Member organizations are  encouraged to implement it.  If the Chartering process was thorough, this should be a  foregone conclusion for the sponsoring Membership and an obvious choice for non‐ member organizations.  OSCRE staff assist by facilitating inquiries, interpreting  published material, and managing comments and suggestions.  Significant issues are  documented and referred to the Workgroup for consideration in future releases.   Updates are undertaken by the Workgroup after considering outstanding issues and  the interests of standards implementers.   Opportunities are identified to either Profile or Extend existing Standard specifications.   Profiles are subsets of a specification and Extensions add capabilities to an existing  specification.  Both Profiles and Extensions are treated as New Work, but may be  considered desirable because they build on existing knowledge and capabilities.   18 ©2009 OSCRE Americas, Inc.
