  3. 3. What is a CMS? ● Content Management System (CMS) ○ A content management system is an application that allows users to create, manage, edit and publish content. ○ Content is typically stored in a database and displayed in a presentation layer based on a set of templates. ○ Main features include: ■ Content creation ■ Content storage ■ Workflow management ■ Publishing
  4. 4. Benefits of a CMS ● An advantage of a CMS is how collaborative it is. Multiple users can log on and contribute, schedule or edit content to be published. CMS can be accessed from anywhere by any number of users. ● Another advantage is that it allows non-technical people to easily create and manage their own web content. For example, users can enter text and upload images without needing to know any HTML or CSS. ● CMS reduces a company’s reliance on front-end engineers to make changes to the website, allowing them to push out changes faster and more efficiently.
  5. 5. What is a Portal? ● A web portal is a specially designed website that brings information together. ● Information is collected from emails, online forums, search engines and other sources. ● Information can be placed in a certain area on the website but the user usually gets to decide where everything goes in the end.
  6. 6. Types of CMS Portals • Portal ○ Enterprise ■ a framework to provide a single point of access to a variety of information and tools ○ Intranet ■ a gateway that unifies access to all enterprise information and applications ○ Web ■ a site that functions as a point of access to either information and / or internet related services
  7. 7. Other CMS Types ● Blog: ○ This type is quite similar to an online “journal” ○ Typically displays in information in chronological format ○ Content / articles ■ Text ■ Graphics ■ Video ■ Comments ● Wiki ○ Typically displays information non- hierarchically. ○ The information is arranged in an unstructured cms format. ○ Information also has extremely simple editing and linking features. Nothing fancy about this type. ○ Content / articles ■ Text ■ Images ■ Video
