PGPEX - VLM 05
Dear Recruiter,
The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was established in 1961 by the
Government of India in collaboration with the Alfred P. Sloan School of
Management MIT, The Ford Foundation and leading Indian business houses.
Over the years, the Institute has developed into one of Asia's finest management
schools.
I am pleased to introduce to you a very innovative educational program
specially designed for the Indian manufacturing sector and its associated
sectors in the country. Leveraging on its long experience of providing high
quality management education to practicing managers, IIM Calcutta in
collaboration with IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras launched the one year full time
residential Post Graduate Program for Executives for Visionary Leadership
in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM) in August, 2007. The PGPEX-VLM Program
was launched under the aegis of the Government of India's National
Manufacturing Competitive Council (NMCC) and the Ministry of Human Resource
Development with the support of industry. The Confederation of Indian
Industry (CII) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have
provided us considerable support in launching this innovative program.
One of the distinctive features of the programme is the module on 'Breakthrough
Management' and the 'Five Step Discovery Process' conducted by Padmashri
Prof. Shoji Shiba, who along with his colleagues at MIT USA had successfully
developed the "Leaders for Manufacturing" program now known as MIT LGO.
A world renowned management Guru, Prof. Shiba, has also been instrumental
in starting the PGPEX-VLM programme. The Gurukul approach of this module
lays the foundation of a change in the mindset of students and helps them
transcend from being functional leaders to change leaders.
The class of 2015-16 (9th batch of 39 students with four female students and
an average age of 28 years) has been selected on the basis of academic
merit, experience and professional achievements, diversity and leadership
potential through a rigorous admission process. The average professional
experience of the class is about 5.7 years. The current batch of students
worked in executive and managerial position in industries spanning a number
of areas including Metal, Automobile, Industrial Products, Heavy Machinery,
Mining and Minerals, Engineering Construction, Software, Operations, Project
Management, planning, design, R&D, Sales and Marketing and Quality Assurance.
I am confident that the participants of this unique program on completion of
all components would be able to enhance their domain knowledge in
manufacturing significantly and develop strong management and leadership
skills and would be transformed into valuable human resources for firms in
or closely related to the manufacturing sector. I invite you to read this
brochure and participate in the placement process.
With Regards,

It gives me immense pleasure in inviting you to the Indian Institute of
Management Calcutta for the placement of PGPEX-VLM students, class of
2016. The one year Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary
Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM) is a unique programme conceived
to meet the growing need of manufacturing and allied sectors in India. It has
been developed by IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, MHRD and NMCC as
a flagship programme under the India-Japan Technical Cooperation Agreement
2006 signed between the Prime Ministers of two countries.
We create an effective learning environment through an industry relevant
curriculum that prepares the students for addressing tomorrow's challenges
in manufacturing. In this one year programme, students go through
multidisciplinary courses in technology and management offered by world
class resources at three world renowned institutes, IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur
and IIT Madras. The programme has an international dimension in the form
of support from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). World
renowned TQM (Total Quality Management) Guru Professor Shoji Shiba (Padma
Shri awardee for his contribution to Indian manufacturing and society)
personally trains the students in breakthrough thinking for leading
manufacturing excellence. The programme provides an exposure to best
practices in manufacturing in Japan where students get the opportunity to
visit Japanese industry (companies such as Toyota, Yamazaki Mazak, Honda,
Mitsui Chemicals etc.) to learn about advanced manufacturing management
principles. Beside this, students get the opportunity to interact with thought
leaders in various domains of manufacturing industry.
I present to you 39 students of the PGPEX-VLM, who in my opinion, are the
future change leaders who not only have the expertise in manufacturing but
also develop an appreciation for the bigger role of manufacturing in the
improvement of our country's society, economy and environment. Their
unique strength comes from their strong desire to reinvent themselves at the
crucial juncture of their life to be better able to help the country by leading
the transformation of manufacturing. They are self motivated, ready to immerse
in challenging, inspiring and sometimes uncomfortable experiences to enable
themselves to discover their capacity to implement change in a larger scale.
In summary, the current batch of PGPEX-VLM students have relevant domain
expertise, display a rare combination of academic accomplishment and rich
professional achievement.
Encouraging placements for past eight batches do reflect the recruiters'
perception and enthusiasm while reinforcing our belief that this programme
will provide the best management talent to meet the needs of manufacturing
industry. I am confident that our association with you through this opportunity
will help to strengthen, lead and transform your esteemed organizations and
augment Indian manufacturing to meet global challenges.

I personally spend around four weeks with them
transferring my experience, mainly in the field
of problem solving methodology initiated by me
called Breakthrough Thinking.
During last eight years, academia consisting of IIMC, IITK and IITM have created 263
visionary leaders tailor made for Indian Manufacturing Industry to enhance global
competitiveness.
PGPEX VLM is an unique program coupling technical and management functions
oriented intellectual inputs delivered by renowned faculty of IIMC, IITK , IITM and
Japanese experts from academia and industry.
Strengthening the curriculum with theories, tools and models of Breakthrough
Management and Five Step Discovery process supported by workshop oriented
learning methods after factory visits in India and Japan, resulted skill development
of the participants of the program and change in mind-set from Small m to Big M.
Only people with consistently high academic records in different branches of
Engineering and at least 4.5 years of prior experience in manufacturing are allowed
to participate in the admission process of this programme. The participants are
handpicked through a rigorous admission test and grueling personal interview in
which they are tested for their ability to learn as to how to transform the manufacturing
sector in India.
I personally spend around four weeks with them transferring my experiences, mainly
in the field of problem solving methodology initiated by me called Breakthrough
Thinking.
They also get excellent academic inputs at the three participating academic institutions,
work on an exciting internship project with the industry and go for a study trip to
Japan. I have no hesitation in saying that this group of students, many of whom have
chosen to give up a settled job and career, have prepared themselves very well to
be able to transform India's manufacturing sector.

PGPEX - VLM 11
The era of corporate management can be divided into three phases. The controlled management, (in vogue from 1930s) which was
top-down with mass production as its basis of existence. Next was the era of continuous and incremental improvement, started in
the 1960s, where the individual - the customer and worker - was the focal point. This is the Japanese approach and is bottom up.
The goal here is to satisfy the current customers and to achieve zero defects. But today, organizations are forced to pursue radical
business ideas that may even include changing the line of business or transforming the business to become more innovative and
powerful. They have to create a consumer segment which didn't exist earlier.
As product life cycles get shorter and competition fierce, Indian companies cannot rely on strategies focused on incremental growth.
Only breakthrough management strategies can give organizations some chance to compete. Does that mean that the traditional
management mantras such as core competence, reengineering are a passe? It appears so. If need be, organisations have to forego
the existing thought process to jump to the next level. Core competency is a narrow concept compared to breakthrough management;
the former is more concerned with technical strengths and corporate culture. Similarly, diversification of business is a move to protect
against existing risk. Breakthrough management does not think about existing risk. It is about taking future risk. The key is to unlearn
what is learnt and learn new strategies. Controlled and incremental management earns money by focusing on its current customer.
On the contrary, breakthrough management anticipates the needs of the future customer.
This principle is applicable for all kinds of organizations - small, medium and big.

Breakthrough Management
International Industry Visit - Japan
The Japanese industrial achievements in the last five decades
are not just attributable to its manufacturing technology, but
also to the Japanese culture and human values. It is about the
cultural ethos of an entire nation. The sense of effective working
styles, simple communication and discipline is what has made
Japan a true leader. True leaders of Indian industry have to
understand the subtle linkages between the management styles
and the underlying cultural philosophy to be able to apply these
techniques to an emerging Indian scenario. A sense of these
undercurrents will help the managers fit their management
styles to a form more suitable to the Indian socio-cultural ethos.
Visionary Leadership Program (VLM) cannot be complete without
this enlightening journey. The VLM students get exposed to the
Japanese Manufacturing Philosophy - through interactions with
Academicians, Industrialists and JICA, the representatives of
the Japanese Government.
The trip starts at Nagoya, covers the city of Tokyo and ends in
Nagoya. The students learn from the factory visits through Prof.
Shoji Shibaís ìFive Step Discovery Processî, imbibe the Japanese
manufacturing culture and get constantly evaluated during
their travel.
Last year the trip covered visits to industry stalwarts like Toyota,
Mitsui chemicals and Sony. Students learnt Toyota Production
System, Visited Toyota Commemorative museum of industry &
Technology.
A Self-Initiated-Research (SIR) is also a part of the pedagogy.
Through the SIRs students make a comparative analysis between
Indian and Japanese best practices, in a chosen context. The
Topics of SIR are diverse, ranging from ìCan a foreigner travel
in metro with only visual signs?î to ì Comparison of types of
shops around metro stations in sub-urban areas of Nagoya
city.î

CONFEDERATION OF INDIAN INDUSTRY: CII is a non-governmental, not-for-profit, industry led and industry managed organization, playing a proactive role in India's development process. A Partnership in Excellence PGPEX - VLM 05 Dear Recruiter, The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was established in 1961 by the Government of India in collaboration with the Alfred P. Sloan School of Management MIT, The Ford Foundation and leading Indian business houses. Over the years, the Institute has developed into one of Asia's finest management schools. I am pleased to introduce to you a very innovative educational program specially designed for the Indian manufacturing sector and its associated sectors in the country. Leveraging on its long experience of providing high quality management education to practicing managers, IIM Calcutta in collaboration with IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras launched the one year full time residential Post Graduate Program for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM) in August, 2007. The PGPEX-VLM Program was launched under the aegis of the Government of India's National Manufacturing Competitive Council (NMCC) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development with the support of industry. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have provided us considerable support in launching this innovative program. One of the distinctive features of the programme is the module on 'Breakthrough Management' and the 'Five Step Discovery Process' conducted by Padmashri Prof. Shoji Shiba, who along with his colleagues at MIT USA had successfully developed the "Leaders for Manufacturing" program now known as MIT LGO. A world renowned management Guru, Prof. Shiba, has also been instrumental in starting the PGPEX-VLM programme. The Gurukul approach of this module lays the foundation of a change in the mindset of students and helps them transcend from being functional leaders to change leaders. The class of 2015-16 (9th batch of 39 students with four female students and an average age of 28 years) has been selected on the basis of academic merit, experience and professional achievements, diversity and leadership potential through a rigorous admission process. The average professional experience of the class is about 5.7 years. The current batch of students worked in executive and managerial position in industries spanning a number of areas including Metal, Automobile, Industrial Products, Heavy Machinery, Mining and Minerals, Engineering Construction, Software, Operations, Project Management, planning, design, R&D, Sales and Marketing and Quality Assurance. I am confident that the participants of this unique program on completion of all components would be able to enhance their domain knowledge in manufacturing significantly and develop strong management and leadership skills and would be transformed into valuable human resources for firms in or closely related to the manufacturing sector. I invite you to read this brochure and participate in the placement process. With Regards, Prof. Saibal Chattopadhyay Director Indian Institute of Management Calcutta Message from the Directorís Desk The class of 2015-16 (9th batch of 39 students with four female students and an average age of 28 years) has been selected on the basis of academic merit, experience and professional achievements, diversity and leadership potential through a rigorous admission process. The average professional experience of the class is about 5.7 years. We choose the very best and make them better

Looking forward to see you on campus, With Regards, Prof. Rajiv Kumar Chairperson, Career Development & Placements Indian Institute of Management Calcutta Message from the Placement Chairpersonís Desk The current batch of PGPEX- VLM participants (39 in total) is a diverse group of experienced executives from manufacturing background. Prior to joining VLMP, these people have served in a variety of sectors such as automobile, metal & mining, cement, electrical and e l e c t r o n i c s , p o w e r , This program offers your organization people who have received one of the best technical and management education relevant for manufacturing. IIMC06 It gives me immense pleasure in inviting you to the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta for the placement of PGPEX-VLM students, class of 2016. The one year Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM) is a unique programme conceived to meet the growing need of manufacturing and allied sectors in India. It has been developed by IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, MHRD and NMCC as a flagship programme under the India-Japan Technical Cooperation Agreement 2006 signed between the Prime Ministers of two countries. We create an effective learning environment through an industry relevant curriculum that prepares the students for addressing tomorrow's challenges in manufacturing. In this one year programme, students go through multidisciplinary courses in technology and management offered by world class resources at three world renowned institutes, IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras. The programme has an international dimension in the form of support from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). World renowned TQM (Total Quality Management) Guru Professor Shoji Shiba (Padma Shri awardee for his contribution to Indian manufacturing and society) personally trains the students in breakthrough thinking for leading manufacturing excellence. The programme provides an exposure to best practices in manufacturing in Japan where students get the opportunity to visit Japanese industry (companies such as Toyota, Yamazaki Mazak, Honda, Mitsui Chemicals etc.) to learn about advanced manufacturing management principles. Beside this, students get the opportunity to interact with thought leaders in various domains of manufacturing industry. I present to you 39 students of the PGPEX-VLM, who in my opinion, are the future change leaders who not only have the expertise in manufacturing but also develop an appreciation for the bigger role of manufacturing in the improvement of our country's society, economy and environment. Their unique strength comes from their strong desire to reinvent themselves at the crucial juncture of their life to be better able to help the country by leading the transformation of manufacturing. They are self motivated, ready to immerse in challenging, inspiring and sometimes uncomfortable experiences to enable themselves to discover their capacity to implement change in a larger scale. In summary, the current batch of PGPEX-VLM students have relevant domain expertise, display a rare combination of academic accomplishment and rich professional achievement. Encouraging placements for past eight batches do reflect the recruiters' perception and enthusiasm while reinforcing our belief that this programme will provide the best management talent to meet the needs of manufacturing industry. • 7. Padma Shri Prof Shoji Shiba, a world renowned Breakthrough Management expert has been guiding the process of transformation of the Indian industry. Globally he is best known for developing the Five Step Discovery Process for Breakthrough Management (BTM) and globalisation of TQM IIMC10 I personally spend around four weeks with them transferring my experience, mainly in the field of problem solving methodology initiated by me called Breakthrough Thinking. During last eight years, academia consisting of IIMC, IITK and IITM have created 263 visionary leaders tailor made for Indian Manufacturing Industry to enhance global competitiveness. PGPEX VLM is an unique program coupling technical and management functions oriented intellectual inputs delivered by renowned faculty of IIMC, IITK , IITM and Japanese experts from academia and industry. Strengthening the curriculum with theories, tools and models of Breakthrough Management and Five Step Discovery process supported by workshop oriented learning methods after factory visits in India and Japan, resulted skill development of the participants of the program and change in mind-set from Small m to Big M. Only people with consistently high academic records in different branches of Engineering and at least 4.5 years of prior experience in manufacturing are allowed to participate in the admission process of this programme. The participants are handpicked through a rigorous admission test and grueling personal interview in which they are tested for their ability to learn as to how to transform the manufacturing sector in India. I personally spend around four weeks with them transferring my experiences, mainly in the field of problem solving methodology initiated by me called Breakthrough Thinking. They also get excellent academic inputs at the three participating academic institutions, work on an exciting internship project with the industry and go for a study trip to Japan. I have no hesitation in saying that this group of students, many of whom have chosen to give up a settled job and career, have prepared themselves very well to be able to transform India's manufacturing sector. The success story of this unique program is evident from the rapid growth in career advancement with satisfactory salary plus perks and increase in responsibilities in high positions in industry with due recognition. The current batch of 39 students is indeed a source of potential visionary leaders in the making who will contribute the development of Indian manufacturing. I urge you to participate in the placement process and give them a chance. Shoji Shiba (Padma Shri Awardee in 2012) Prof. Shoji Shibaís GURUKUL PGPEX - VLM 11
  • 8. The era of corporate management can be divided into three phases. The controlled management, (in vogue from 1930s) which was top-down with mass production as its basis of existence. Next was the era of continuous and incremental improvement, started in the 1960s, where the individual - the customer and worker - was the focal point. This is the Japanese approach and is bottom up. The goal here is to satisfy the current customers and to achieve zero defects. But today, organizations are forced to pursue radical business ideas that may even include changing the line of business or transforming the business to become more innovative and powerful. They have to create a consumer segment which didn't exist earlier. As product life cycles get shorter and competition fierce, Indian companies cannot rely on strategies focused on incremental growth. Only breakthrough management strategies can give organizations some chance to compete. Does that mean that the traditional management mantras such as core competence, reengineering are a passe? It appears so. If need be, organisations have to forego the existing thought process to jump to the next level. Core competency is a narrow concept compared to breakthrough management; the former is more concerned with technical strengths and corporate culture. Similarly, diversification of business is a move to protect against existing risk. Breakthrough management does not think about existing risk. It is about taking future risk. The key is to unlearn what is learnt and learn new strategies. Controlled and incremental management earns money by focusing on its current customer. On the contrary, breakthrough management anticipates the needs of the future customer. This principle is applicable for all kinds of organizations - small, medium and big. Level of Thought Level of Experience Facts 3. Go up abstraction ladder 4. Create model/hypothesis 1. Perceive Symptoms of change 2. Go down abstraction ladder 5. To see future through model/hypothesis Five step discovery Process IIMC12 Breakthrough Management International Industry Visit - Japan The Japanese industrial achievements in the last five decades are not just attributable to its manufacturing technology, but also to the Japanese culture and human values. It is about the cultural ethos of an entire nation. The sense of effective working styles, simple communication and discipline is what has made Japan a true leader. True leaders of Indian industry have to understand the subtle linkages between the management styles and the underlying cultural philosophy to be able to apply these techniques to an emerging Indian scenario. A sense of these undercurrents will help the managers fit their management styles to a form more suitable to the Indian socio-cultural ethos. Visionary Leadership Program (VLM) cannot be complete without this enlightening journey. The VLM students get exposed to the Japanese Manufacturing Philosophy - through interactions with Academicians, Industrialists and JICA, the representatives of the Japanese Government. The trip starts at Nagoya, covers the city of Tokyo and ends in Nagoya. The students learn from the factory visits through Prof. Shoji Shibaís ìFive Step Discovery Processî, imbibe the Japanese manufacturing culture and get constantly evaluated during their travel. Last year the trip covered visits to industry stalwarts like Toyota, Mitsui chemicals and Sony. Students learnt Toyota Production System, Visited Toyota Commemorative museum of industry & Technology. A Self-Initiated-Research (SIR) is also a part of the pedagogy. Through the SIRs students make a comparative analysis between Indian and Japanese best practices, in a chosen context. The Topics of SIR are diverse, ranging from ìCan a foreigner travel in metro with only visual signs?î to ì Comparison of types of shops around metro stations in sub-urban areas of Nagoya city.î PGPEX - VLM 13
