The document discusses environmental management systems (EMS). It explains that an EMS provides a systematic way for an organization to manage its environmental impacts and improve environmental performance. The document outlines the key elements of an EMS model including planning, implementation, checking, and reviewing/improving. It also discusses ISO 14000 standards for EMS and environmental policies adopted by several Indian companies.
3. • Serves as a tool to improve environmental performance
• Provides a systematic way of managing
• Focus on continual Improvement of system
• Gives order and consistency for organisation
• Systematic way of managing an organisation’s environmental
affairs
• Based on plan-Do-Check-Act[PDCA]
• It reduces its environmental impacts and increase its operating
efficiency

Waste reduction
To meet these goals
1. a proven capability to handle high frequency data
2. high performance indicators
3. transparent handling and processing of data
4
5. 4. powerful calculation engine
5. customised factor handling
6. multiple integration capabilities
7. automation of workflows and QA processes and
in-depth
8. flexible reporting

• assigns accountability and responsibility.
• framework for training achieve objectives and desired
performance

• understand legislative requirements
• way to implement policies and objectives find future
opportunities
• establish their own EMS
• e-reporting
9. Identify Environmental Aspects
Eg; air pollutants
Determine most important to company
Eg; workers health and safety
Legal and other requirements
Objectives and Targets
Eg; objectives-overall Goals,eg; minimize use
Target-Detailed, Quantified, eg; minimise by 10% by specific date
Management Action to support objectives and targets

14. ISO 14000 STANDARDS
Series of international standards for environmental
management
ISO 14001 is the first in 14000 series and specifies
the requirements of EMS.
Overall aim of ISO 14001 and other standards in the
14000 series is to support environmental protection
and the prevention of pollution in harmony with
socio- economic needs.
ISO 14001 applies to any organization that wishes to
improve and demonstrate environmental performance
to others through the presence of a certified EMS.
14
15. SOME STANDARDS UNDER ISO 14000 SERIES
ISO 14001 is the EMS standard and it has a companion
standard ISO14004
14010 series of standards are about auditing
14020 is about environmental labeling.
14030 is a standard on environmental performance
evaluation.
14040 series standards are on environmental life cycle
assessment(LCA) and they are the only part of ISO
14000 series that rely on competent engineering and
environmental science.

21. CONCLUSION
EMS is a method of going about your business while
managing environmental risks.
Provides order and consistency to the organization.
Involves incorporating environmentally responsible
practices into everyday business proces.
The ISO 14000 series can be most effective if used
together.
We view the LCA standards as being central to the
standards. As such they can be used to analyse
environmental aspects and impacts. Since, “what gets
measured gets done”.
