1. Classroom Observation 1
Meeting the group and the teacher and also the development of a classroom routine.
It was a 3 year-old room at a Nursery Kindergarten. It was a 15-children group. Teacher
introduced me and I greeted them in L1 and L2. Everybody answered waving their hands
and smiling. They knew I would come because their teacher had explained I was a new
teacher , La maestra de Inglés” . They were very delighted to say their names and
greeted me then. The teacher had prepared an activity related with a project started some
days before “ the senses “ .
The teacher called them by their complete names which they recognized good and in so
doing they look for the activity ( instead of handing in the papers on their tables). It had
two T. shirts, one of them they painted with crayons and the other with a brush with coffee.
Resources coffee , a bowl with a little water and crayons and a paper with the activity
already printed in black and white.
Teacher asked them questions related to the colours used, and the reason, some answers
were elicited as fan clubs or their favourites. Some of them understood better or in advance
the activity, while others needed the teacher’s scaffolding. Then I commented it so she told
me it was because of the difference births’ dates (two or till six months of difference among
some of them).
Finally they showed me their drawings (they never forgot I was there despite they were
focused on the activity). Their drawings were held in another room with the teacher ‘s help.
Then they sang a song to greet the kindergarten and then another one to move their
bodies.
Finally the teacher gave them the toys they asked for and everybody played in groups or
individually.
Classroom Observation 2
Creativity, Play and Multimodality
Today was my second day. Children were ready to start playing with dough. They were
excited and full of energy. Teacher asked them if mon or any member of the family made
delicious pasta at home, so children started answering about their expperiences. Then they
began to mold freely, after some minutes teacher gave some cookie cutters and roller pins.
They inmediately took them and started doing figures. Some of them, coudn't solve to take
the dough out of the cookie cutter, so teacher and I helped them. Later teacher left me
some minutes alone and I began to play with them. Animals, stars, hearts figures got them
really engaged and happy. They talked among them about their figures.
There was a roller pin missing and one of them wanted his mates's one, but after giving
another from the box, the problem was solved.
They understood instructions really very good . At the end teacher said time to hide the
dough, everyone did a ball with it and one by one put the rest of it into the dough box.
2. Classroom Observation 3
Spring Time
Today was my last Classroom Observation. I had the opportunity to talk with them because
the teacher was serving their breakfast and in so doing they called me Teacher ana, and
say Hello when I arrived at the kindergarten. They are so cute and I feel our relationship
starts growing.
Children was having breakfast and then they started to do an activity about last Friday pic-
nic. They celebrated the Spring day and today they painted a flower with tempera paint,
and instead brushes children used their fingers to colout it. They developed
it enthusiastically and really motivated. After that teacher started singing and children
sang the song too, as a recreation transition after the activity. They had fun and moved
their bodies. However there was one child, who was a little shy and didn't want to play so
he sat near me and stayed just looking at them.
Assistantship 1
Sep 26
Today was really exciting children were full of energy. Teacher asked me to help her with
the Body song in English, ( this is the lesson unit at the kindergarten) so I prepared my
computer and I showed it to them. We danced and identified parts of the body, previously I
took some stuffed animals and told the parts of their bodies in English, then I showed with
my own body. After that we listened to the song. and I invited them to dance,. As the
teacher liked their motivation,( I think) let me continue so I had to. We made a circle and I
went in first to sing the song and then the children who wanted to dance. I saw them have
fun. However There was a child who was aside from the rest, teacher always told me about
him.
After that their teacher continued with her activities, She told them a tale and then gave a
sheet of paper to make them draw about it. No transition here.
Assistantship 2
Oct 3
This was my last Assistantship, I greeted them and helped the teacher with the organization
of the class. They were eating some cookies in their spare time. Then the teacher showed a
picture of a child and its body parts. she asked them if they remembered the body parts'
names. Children answered together about them, however someone didn't respond because
they were distracted . After that teacher gave some papers in white and they had to draw
themselves ( a girl or a boy was ok). On those drawings I saw their madurity, some of them
drew cirles and dots as the face's parts meanwhile others, simple lines. Finally they sang the
song of the Body in spanish and they had fun with it.
I can see their attention is not everyday the same. After some time they get bored and start
getting up from their chairs or talking about other things.
It is a cute group and the teacher has a good relationship with them. As I sang the body
song the previous class, we sang it again, they like to imitate and mime as I do and get fun
of the activity when they move or act.
3. Practicum 1
October 8th
The lesson I planned was really funny for them. They were really excited to see what I had
for them. I told them to sit on the floor, so as to appreciate the video, but it was too close
for me to move. Their classes are more focussed on their assistance rather than an early
education program because they are 3-4 -year-old children. So the strategies used and
the resources implemented as the Hello song and the robot made them be overexcited and
danced a lot. A must : There was a child who never wants to play with his peers and to my
surprise, he was the first to raise his hand to guess the mood on the board with a peer ( I
have to add he was with a smile all the class). Everybody took part to make puppets, they
were calmer and enjoyed a lot also they commented it with their families ( Today their
teacher told me that) They were totally engaged with English. Some of them could say their
names, and feelings after the class, Others were shier and just waved their hands by moving
their puppets
Practicum 2
October 10th
Wow ! What cute children !
Today was a little different Other friends "the shapes" came to visit them, to help Buddy.
The story is along the lessons to know more about shapes and other next contents to help
Buddy with his friend Pip, the robot. They put shapes up to make a robot on a sheet of
paper. I had to explain how to glue and then stick on the worksheet.
Fishing shapes at ELA section was amazing, however they wanted a fishing rod and a box
full of shapes for each one. I had taken four sets to share among four children each. To
respect turns and work in groups was something I had to work with them and also repeat
the rules of the game. When the class was over a child did not want to and started crying,
Tears rolling on his chicks made me feel overwhelmed.
They greeted me perfectly. They knew about some moods and imitated the faces' mood.
One more thing, the headteacher is in all the classes and she wants someone of my staff
to work there next year.
Practicum 3
October 16th
Today I told them a story about how Pip's father landed on land. I took a bag with some
robot body parts to show them. They were very anxious to put eyes, nose, mouth and ears
on his face. After that I told Pip, the robot, brought a game to play with them, but
everybody wanted to go first to put the pieces of the body parts up on the magnetic
board. So I had to repeat the rules of the game, and that they should respect turns. So
I gave my hand and they stood up one by one to pass in order to the front board and
match the pieces of the body parts puzzle. Everybody understood in this way. Finally the
ELA time, they were so anxious and overexcited to play that I felt they did not listen to
me at all. Jumping to the heavens as I called the game was amazing and funny. Some of
them touched their noses, or eyes really good, others nodded their heads and smiled and
jumped like kangaroos till the end of the hopscotch. I realized the difference about
kinaesthetic, spatial and logical skills between 3 and almost 4 years old children. Finally
they did not want me to go, because they loved playing.
Practicum 4
October 22nd
My last class was really funny, I was really nervous because my camera did not work
4. properly, I had to record with the cell-phone, so during the class I was not sure if
it would be possible. Anyway I told myself, " I have to go on" and so I did. The class
developed good enough. Children were amazing, to accomplish the activities we had been
preparing for this class before. The purpose was to fix Pip, the robot, and other ones who
were his friends. I told them a story about robots, and the importance to put the robots'
parts up, to be happy again and in so doing play with them. Then the song of the body,
which they had to teach the robots so as to dance with them.I was very glad to hear them
say, recognize and understand some words related to the classroom language, shapes and
the body parts. Collaborative work was not an easy task, they always want to have their own
material to perform their activities. Young though , they could do some tasks by themselves
and others needed the teachers' help. All in all, their last words to me were, " Teacher,
seño, te vas ? " This experience was really engaging for them and for me too.
To say thankyou !
I just came back to say thank you for the kindless and the opportunity for the Practice.
With the headteacher's permission, I passed by the kindergarten ( to give them souvenirs
and a cake for teachers) and I told children, that Buddy had to say them "thank you ".
because they had helped with the robots. and one of the children asked me , y donde
estaPip y sus amigos, los otros robots ??? Wowww !! So I told they had gone home to play
together.
So cute! It was when I remembered the theory in Didactics, with TT, stated by Sandie
Mourão (June 2014) all the time they played seriously !!!
