NEAR FIELD
COMMUNICATION

      By :Amit Patel (RK University,Rajkot)
INTRODUCTION
 NFC is one of the latest short-range wireless connectivity
technology, •NFC offers safe simple and • communication
between electronic devices. Users of NFC-enabled devices
can simply point or touch their devices to other NFC-
enabled elements in the environment to communicate with
them, making application and data usage easy and
    convenient.
 With NFC technology, communication occurs when an
NFC- compatible device is brought within a few centimeters
of another NFC device or an NFC tag.
 The big advantage of the short transmission range is that it
inhibits eavesdropping on NFC-enabled transactions. NFC
technology opens up exciting new usage scenarios for
EVOLUTION OF NFC
TECHNOLOGY
 In 2004, NFC Forum was formed by
Nokia, Philips, Sony,to set standards for NFC . Every
NFC enabled device will have “N-Mark” trademark
    ,developed by NFC Forum.

EVOLUTION OF NFC
    TECHNOLOGY
 In 2006

First mobile phone( nokia 6131) with NFC released
    by NOKIA.
How NFC Works

                                                     •Operates at 13.56 MHz
•Transfers data at up to 424
                                                     bits/sec

 1) Coil in the first smart phone sets up a current that is
picked up a second smart phone or reader.
 2) The second smart phone receives the ―induced current‖ from
the first, recognizes it as a valid signal and offers a connection.
 3) The first cell phone accepts the connection and begins the
    transaction.
Mobile devices, NFC has three
 modes of operation
This NFC mode enables mobile devices to
read data stored in passive RFID tags
embedded in public posters, displays, and
products — and to act upon that data that
                contains a Uniform Resource Locator
(URL), which is an Internet encoding of
access instructions for a file or Web
address, or instruction for making a call, or
Reader/Writer the SMS instruction for sending a text
message. This NFC mode also enables
mobile devices to write data to some tags –
notably virtual tags in other devices.
Conti..

This NFC mode enables mobile device
                 owners to make a contactless
business transaction, in the same way
smart cards are used today. This
                 mode of operation enables mobile
                 devices to be used for
                 identification, payment and access
                 control applications.
Card Emulation
Conti..
               This NFC mode enables mobile
devices to more easily interact with
each other (i.e., each phone has to
be equipped with NFC and the
               enabling applications) to quickly
               launch a mobile communications
bearer for sharing data with each
               other, whether to exchange business
               cards, photos, documents or other
Peer to Peer
type of personal information in “peer-
               to-peer” data transfers.
APPLICATION OF NFC

 NFC applications can be split into the
    following three basic categories:

 Touch and Go
 Touch and Confirm
 Touch and Connect
APPLICATION OF NFC
 Touch and Go
Applications such as access control or transport/event
ticketing, where the user needs only to bring the device
storing the ticket or access code close to the reader.
Example for picking up an Internet URL from a smart label
    on a poster.

                                Touch
                                and go
                                Mode of
                                applicat
                                ion
APPLICATION OF NFC
 Touch and Confirm
Applications such as mobile payment where the user
has to confirm the interaction by entering a password
    or just accepting the transaction.
APPLICATION OF NFC
 Touch and Connect
Linking two NFC-enabled devices to enable peer to
peer transfer of data such as downloading
music, exchanging images or synchronizing address
    books.

Data
transfer
via NFC
COMPARISON WITH EXISTING
TECHNOLOGY
ADVANTAGES OF NFC

 Make payments or use coupons via
devices, instead of credit or debit cards
 Transfer files and share documents
 Download information about objects, services or
    places from “smart posters”
 Display electronic identity documents, like air
    travel boarding passes
 Faster and easier payments
 Quick access to information
DISADVANTAGES OF NFC

 The system has the limitation that it can be operated
only with devices under a short range i.e around 10
    cm.

 The data transfer rate is very less at about
    106kbps, 212 kbps and 424kbps.
DEVICES WITH NFC
TECHNOLOGY
CONCLUSION
 Mobile handsets are the primary target for NFC and soon
NFC will be implemented in most handheld devices. Even
though NFC have the shortest range among radio frequency
technologies, combining them with existing technologies
like Bluetooth or Infrared can increase its range of
    applications.
