Why network file storage?
Files and directories appear and work just as they would on local storage
Multiple users, computers, and applications have access to the same set of
files
High levels of throughput and IOPS
(to serve multiple users, computers, and applications)
with near-local latencies
Existing applications and IT environments work

Organizing large amounts of data
• FSx supports the use of Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS) Namespaces
• Use DFSn for file system consolidation under a single namespace
Users no longer need to access each FSx for Windows
file system using its DNS name, which comprised of the
file system id and domain name. Instead, users use
domain names and namespaces to gain access to file
shares.

Scale-out read performance using read-replicas
• FSx supports the use of Microsoft’s Distributed File System (DFS) Replication
• Use DFSr to scale out read performance across multiple file systems
This allows read-heavy applications like HPC
workloads, data analytics, video transcoding,
machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc., to
scale out across multiple file systems and achieve
higher read performance then what’s available
from a single file system.

Scale-out performance using data sharding
• Use DFSn to increase performance of heavy read and write workloads by
sharding data across multiple file systems
By dividing your data into smaller data sets
or ‘shards’ and storing them across
different file systems, applications
accessing your data from multiple
instances can achieve high levels of
performance by reading and writing to
these shards in parallel.

Organizing large amounts of data • FSx supports the use of Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS) Namespaces • Use DFSn for file system consolidation under a single namespace Users no longer need to access each FSx for Windows file system using its DNS name, which comprised of the file system id and domain name. Instead, users use domain names and namespaces to gain access to file shares. domain.namenamespace share_1 share_2 share_3

Scale-out read performance using read-replicas • FSx supports the use of Microsoft’s Distributed File System (DFS) Replication • Use DFSr to scale out read performance across multiple file systems This allows read-heavy applications like HPC workloads, data analytics, video transcoding, machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc., to scale out across multiple file systems and achieve higher read performance then what’s available from a single file system. Scale-out performance using data sharding • Use DFSn to increase performance of heavy read and write workloads by sharding data across multiple file systems By dividing your data into smaller data sets or ‘shards’ and storing them across different file systems, applications accessing your data from multiple instances can achieve high levels of performance by reading and writing to these shards in parallel. domain.namenamespace A-F G-M N-Z FS_1share FS_2share FS_3share
