What is Manufacturing?
• Process of production of object from metals or non
metals, with or without application of force, with or
without application of heat, with or without use of
machines, joining or removal of excess material.

 Computer – Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
• CAM is the use of computer system to plan, manage, and
control the operations of manufacturing plants through
either direct or indirect computer interface with plant’s
production process.
• CAM is the use of computer based software tools that
assist engineers and machinists in manufacturing or
prototyping product components.
• CAM – utilize part geometer defined by CAD drawing.
• CAM – use the materials tools, work serious that can be
used in actual machining process.
• CAM – use computers in process planning , scheduling,

3.2 CAD/CAM
• It’s integration of CAD/CAM
• Concerned with the engineering function in both design and
manufacturing .
• Denotes an integration of design and manufacturing activities by
means of computer system.
• Goal is to not only automate certain phases of design and certain
phases of manufacturing , but to also automate the transition
from design to manufacturing.

CAD data base would be automatically converted into process plan for making

Computer aided Process Planning(CAPP) systems
– Used to prepare process plan using computer system.
– used -to prepare route sheets. (off line).
Process plan
Process plan contains :
– detailed instructions for making a part or a component.
– sequence of operations, machines, tools, speeds and
feeds, dimensions, tolerances, stock removed, inspection
procedures and time standards (i.e., cycle time).

• It is called Route Sheet, because - lists the machines
(machine tools) through which the part is routed
• Used for manual process plan or offline process plan

Master CAM
 Is most widely used CAD/CAM.
 Is a suite of computer- Aided manufacturing(CAM) and
CAD/CAM software applications.
 Allows tool path planning and NC code generation for
a given parts. This part can either be drawn in Master
CAM or imported from other CAD packages.
 Is a three – dimensional geometry creation engine
along with features to aid in tool path generation and
verification.
 It’s also guided computer numerical controlled(CNC)
machine tools in the manufacture of parts.(can
generate CNC code automatically)

• Master CAM’s comprehensive set of predefined tool
paths including contour, drill, pocketing, face, peel mills,
engraving, surface high speed, advanced multi axis, and
many more enable machinist to cut parts efficiently and
accurately.
What do we need to begin Master CAM ?

• Tooling
• Library or create
• Process plans
• Fixtures
• Define orientation and location

  • 8.  Computer – Aided Manufacturing (CAM) • CAM is the use of computer system to plan, manage, and control the operations of manufacturing plants through either direct or indirect computer interface with plant’s production process. • CAM is the use of computer based software tools that assist engineers and machinists in manufacturing or prototyping product components. • CAM – utilize part geometer defined by CAD drawing. • CAM – use the materials tools, work serious that can be used in actual machining process. • CAM – use computers in process planning , scheduling, shop floor control, work study, quality control .. etc.9/17/2019 Lecture 17 CAM 8

  • 12. 3.2 CAD/CAM • It’s integration of CAD/CAM • Concerned with the engineering function in both design and manufacturing . • Denotes an integration of design and manufacturing activities by means of computer system. • Goal is to not only automate certain phases of design and certain phases of manufacturing , but to also automate the transition from design to manufacturing.   • 14. Cont.. Computer aided Process Planning(CAPP) systems – Used to prepare process plan using computer system. – used -to prepare route sheets. Cont.. Master CAM  Is most widely used CAD/CAM.  Is a suite of computer- Aided manufacturing(CAM) and CAD/CAM software applications.  Allows tool path planning and NC code generation for a given parts. This part can either be drawn in Master CAM or imported from other CAD packages.  Is a three – dimensional geometry creation engine along with features to aid in tool path generation and verification.  It’s also guided computer numerical controlled(CNC) machine tools in the manufacture of parts.(can generate CNC code automatically) 9/17/2019 Lecture 17 CAM 19
