This document outlines information about kiwis, including:
- There are 5 species of kiwi found in New Zealand forests and scrub lands.
- Kiwis are threatened by habitat loss from deforestation and predators like dogs, cats, and stoats.
- To protect kiwis, people should keep dogs leashed in kiwi areas, fund predator control programs, preserve forests from logging, and create more wildlife reserves.

3. General facts
Kiwi’s are a flightless bird
There are five different species of Kiwis ( North
island Brown Kiwi, Okarita Brown Kiwi, Stewrat
Island Brown Kiwi, Haast Brown Kiwi, and the
Little Spotted Kiwi)
They weigh up to 3kg
Eat seeds, grubs and fruit
They can live up to 30 years
4. Kiwi’s habitat
Kiwi live mainly in native
forest, but they are also
found in pine forests,
sub-alpine tussock, scrub
and rough farmland.
6. Where Kiwi’s are found
· The Haast Brown is found in the rugged
mountains behind Haast. They spend their
summers in the high sub-alpine tussock
grasslands, but probably retreat to the
lowland forests in the winter. Some have
been found living in burrows in the snow.
The Little Spotted Kiwi, which were once
common in the South Island, are now extinct
on the mainland but survive on some
offshore islands, and in the Kaori Kiwi
Reserve, in Wellington.
7. Where Kiwi’s are found
The North Island Brown is found in native
forests, pockets of bush, pine forests, and
scrub country.
The Great Spotted is found only in the
South Island, predominantly in North West
Nelson, Central Westland and Eastern
Canterbury, where they live mainly in high,
often harsh, hill country. They appear to
prefer wet, mossy, sub-alpine vegetation.
The Okarito Brown Kiwi, living in lowland
forest just north of Franz Josef in the South
Island.
8. What endangers the Kiwi’s
habitat?
Loss of habitat is due to deforestation and
destruction of large tracts of native bush is
also endangering the kiwi. Not only does this
threaten its food sources, but deforestation
means the kiwi has fewer places to hide from
its many predators.
9. The Kiwi’s enemies and what
threat do they cause?
The biggest enemies of kiwi are dogs, feral
cats and other imported pets including the
stoat, of all things, as well as ferrets.
10. How can we show Kaitiakitanga to
make sure that Kiwi’s don’t become
endangered/extinct?
Not allow our dogs of the lead where Kiwi’s
live.
Donate money so wild cats can be de-sexed.
Stop chopping down our forests.
Trap stoats in Kiwi protected areas.
Create more national parks.
