3. Potager
A Kitchen Garden often called a potager is not your
typical family garden. It is ornamental as well as
functional. It can be the focal point in an ornamental all-
season landscape or a humble little plot outside the back
door.Traditionally the Kitchen Garden was a structured
garden filled with herbs, vegetables, fruits and flowers.
Nothing tastes better than fresh fruits and vegetables. If
those fruits and vegetables came from your very own
garden there's an added layer of satisfaction. I take a
great deal of pleasure serving a red sauce made from
tomatoes that I planted and nurtured along
4. Success of Kitchen Gardening
The success of Kitchen gardening depends upon many factors. So
before planting and planning kitchen garden all the factors
should be taken into consideration
Select the correct Place for kitchen Garden
i)Situate your kitchen garden in a sunny place which would be a
most convenient place.A good kitchen garden may have atleast
six hours of full sun each day.
ii) Place the garden near your kitchen.
iii) Selection of Soil : The soil should be very fertile and well
draining so that water never puddles after a rain storm.
iv) Choose a spot close to a water supply for conveience , and to
avoid to use long length of hoses.
v) Planting a vegetables garden where it can be visited
frequently will allow you to monitor plant pests and general
health of the garden more easily.
5. Soil Selection
The soil chosen for vegetable gardening should have
sufficient water content and should be naturally
drained regularly. Too much or too less of water is not
appropriate for plants.
Soil should not contain rough stones and patches
Avoid any soil that remains soggy after a rain.
6. soil preparation for of
kitchen gardeners:
It's the soil preparation that makes or breaks a
garden. The more organic material you mix into the
soil, the better. Organic mater comes in many forms.
Compost is best. It adds nutrients as well as a host of
beneficial microorganisms. Compost can also be used
for mulch but I usually dig most of it in and use grass
clippings, bark, and pine straw for mulch.Make sure
the garden is well dug. Digging down six to eight
inches will not be enough. Make sure the roots can
burrow deep
7. Plant Selection :
There are a lot of factors that go into what to plant in
you Kitchen Garden. A Kitchen Garden in Oregon will
not resemble a Kitchen Garden growing here in our
Country.. The climate and the seasons are different.
At this point the best thing to do is to make a list of
vegetables, herbs and flowers that you are
considering , Obtain chart from Agriculture
Department for seasonal vegetables, flowers etc.
8. Design a kitchen garden
Using your garden layout map which you created in
the planning stage use stakes to mark out where
different rows will be planted.
Build your trellises for climbing plants such as pea.
Create mound on which you will put in the Vinning
plants such as cucumber.
Do not forget to establish your pathway early so that
you won,t be walking across areas which is planted.
9. Sowing the vegetables : God has blessed Pakistan with all
four season summer , , so all.The winter vegetables are
usually planted in month of august- October, November
before frost sets or in feb-to march and harvested in
march, April till May. The summer crop is planted in
October November before frost or march, April, may and

October. Summer vegetables are Bitter gourd (karela),
Ladyfinger (bhindi), Mint (pudina), Mushrooms (khumbi),
Egg plant (brinjal) Pumpkin (kaddu Bottle gourd (lauki),

(French beans, flat beans etc),shimla mirch bell pepper
,chillies, tomatoes.Winter crops are potatoes, peas,
radish ,carrot, cauliflower, cabbage, salad, dania, onion,
garlic, salad, spinach.
10. Staking Vegetable:
Some vegetable plants, particularly tomatoes, need
extra support in order to grow well. Stakes, cages,
and trellis systems can all help these plants grow tall
and strong, supporting healthy plants and a good
harvest
11. Weeding a vegetable Garden
:
Weeds rob water and nutrients from your vegetable
plants, so it's very important to keep them at bay.
The best way to remove weeds is to chop off the top
of the weed at ground level -- you may have to repeat
this several times, but eventually the weed will die.
12. Watering a Kitchen Garden
:
If rainfall alone isn't giving your plants enough water,
you'll need to consider watering options. There are
several irrigation methods that can give you an easy
solution to keeping your plants watered and healthy.
13. Guide to vegetable garden
pests :
Different types of vegetable garden pests attack
different plants and can range from minor nuisances
to major problems. Identify and eliminate these pests
as early as possible to protect your garden from
damage.
14. Maintain the Garden -
Once you plant your crop, maintain it well. Each crop
has different harvesting periods. When harvesting
take good care of avoiding damage to the crops. This
is an important tip for kitchen gardening.
15. Continual Process - Kitchen gardening is not a once in
a week procedure. Once started you have to continue
and nurture your garden well like a kid.
