There are two types of addiction disorders: Substance use disorders and Behavioral addiction disorders. This presentation tries to explain the different types of behavioral addictions.

2. What is addiction?
• uncontrollable habit of using alcohol or other drugs.
• people can also develop addictions to behaviors
• addictions to activities such as eating, exercising, sex,
video game playing and gambling – can be real addictions!

4. What makes an addiction?
• Two aspects that all addictions have in common:
• (1)Maladaptive behavior- instead of helping to overcome problems
they help to complicate the problem
• E.g.: a gambler- more money ? Heavy drinker- more happy ? Sex
addict- more intimacy ?
• (2)Persistent behavior: they will continue to engage in the addictive
behavior, despite it causing them trouble.

• Relationship problems
• Family and financial problems……

7. Internet addiction
• internet addiction is a behavioral addiction in which a person
becomes dependent on use of the internet, or other online devices,
as a maladaptive way of coping with life's stresses
• video game addiction, cybersex or online sex addiction, and online
gambling addiction.
• addiction to mobile devices, such as cellphones and smartphones
• addiction to social networking sites, such as Facebook

• Internet sex addiction is a combination of sex addiction and internet
addiction, which can develop when people compulsively use the
internet for sexual gratification.

11. • When people use the internet, they become detached from the world
around them, and from other people. Taken to the extreme, this
detachment can cut you off from developing relationships with
others, and from living in the present, both of which can cause
difficulties in relationships, especially intimate relationships

12. Harmful Effects of Video Games
• Increased risk of light-induced seizures, musculoskeletal disorders of
the upper extremities and increased metabolic rate.
• Increased aggressive thoughts and aggressive behaviors,
particularly in children under age 10.
• Reduced pro-social (cooperative) behaviors in social interactions.
