My client, which is a local comic book store has a range of different audience to appeal with. This is
due to the fact that as a comic book store they stock a range of different comics to fit each age
range. However survey which was conducted at New York Comicon shows that 63% of comic books
and graphic novels are purchased by men and only 37% were bought buy women. Also the target
showed that 57% of comic book and graphic novels are bought by 13-29 year olds. I would leave this
information and use it as my target audience for the product I am making the client however as the
shop is actually based inside of a cinema according to the shop owner a lot of the traffic comes
through the cinema as children and adults walk through it to get to their film. However with the
information already available to me I shall be using this as my client research. The aesthetic of the
comic book is somewhat gender neutral however as you're probably aware that comic books are
more than usually directed at boys and men. I could use gender specific colours like blues and
greens however this could be somewhat sexist and actually stop the females shoppers from coming.
To avoid damaging my clients business I’ll use a gender neutral colour scheme and or simplistic
colours like black, whites and reds. The website I used to find the information was called ‘ICv2: THE
BUSINESS OF GEEK CULTUR’ which also has a very genderless colour scheme consisting of black and
white with the colour coming form the article images.
Audience
The location demographic also should be taken into consideration as even though only 37% of
comics are bought by females. Harrogate where the comic book store is located has a female
population of 51% which the male percentage taking only 49% with the average age being 42. Two
other important demographics that could be important include religion and language 96,6% of
people living in Harrogate speak English with the second highest being polish with 0.9%. Religion on
the other hand is a little more spread out. 68.6% of the population of Harrogate are Christian, 22.5%
non religion with ‘other’ having 7.70%. The other section is quite interesting as 11,181 people did
not state a religion, 430 people identified as a Jedi Knight and 19 people believe in Heavy Metal.
