4. I included that…
Mostly because we just got done talking
about remix. But also because the X-
men character in the foreground of that
poster is Warpath (a Native American)
and I just wanted to get some positive
Native American content in this week
because of the holiday coming up.
Think about the pilgrims and Indians
story a little. Be generous. Know your
history. *steps off soap box*
5. Okay, then… class stuff
We had good conferences this week,
and I hope that all of you are finding the
plans we made useful.
As I said to you, the activities start to
wane a bit for class in these last several
weeks. It becomes a lot more about you
getting your work done for sequence 5.
I’ll be grading project 4 this week–
hopefully by Wednesday.
6. Okay, then… class stuff
This is a great time for all of you to
reflect, as well. If you look at your
grade– each of you has a grade that
seems, pretty much, representative of
what you have done and where you will
likely end up.
If your grade isn’t what you’d like, you
should start making plans to figure out
how you might change that.
7. Okay, then… class stuff
Also remember that I’m here if you need
to talk about things. Don’t sit in
confusion.
But remember that I’ve provided you
with lots of material, too, so please don’t
make me repeat things.
8. Some theorizing…
If you can recall, back when we started
class (all those weeks ago) I offered you
a quote from Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity
as a sort of explanation for the theme of
our class (the reason for the lists).
That quote was…
9. “A while back, when Dick and Barry and I agreed
that what really matters is what you like, not
what you are like, Barry proposed the idea of a
questionnaire for prospective partners, a two-or
three- page multiple-choice document that covered
all the music/film/TV book bases. It was intended
to a)dispense with awkward conversation, and b)to
prevent a chap from leaping into bed with
someone who might, at a later date, turn out to
have every Julio Iglesias record ever made.’(117)
10. And I bring that up…
…because one of the technological
things we didn’t dig into as much as we
might have this semester is social
networking (Facebook, Twitter,
MySpace, etc.)
Social Networking is meant to bring
people together and to give people
chances to find and meet new people.
11. But I would assert…
…that the profiles we build in that space
are rhetorically constructed.
What I mean is this: you are thinking
about how you want to appear to a
specific audience and THAT is how your
Facebook or MySpace profile appears.
That’s how your Tweets read. It’s not
that I’d say social networking makes us
lie, but I would argue that social
networking is a form of self-fabrication.
12. Then I found Glue.
www.GetGlue.com is a slightly different
sort of social networking site.
It’s all about rating things with a like or a
dislike (the part Facebook forgot) and
“checking in” on the things you’re doing.
In other words, it’s sort of a big digital
version of exactly what the High Fidelity
quote talks about, a place where your
identity becomes the sum total of you
likes and dislikes.
13. So this week…
I want all of you to use Glue a little bit.
Specifically, I want you to spend 1 hour
(or more) rating things, and one day (or
more) out of the week I want you to check
in at least 10 times, sitting down and
indicating what you’re
doing/watching/reading/listening to.
So, of course, this will require you join
Glue, but it’s free and you can login and
integrate it into Facebook.
14. To sign up
1) Go to http://www.getglue.com
2) Click on “create account” near the bottom of
the screen
3) Either create a login, or login using your
Facebook account (your choice)
4) Once you login, you’ll be given lots of options
on the screen to start rating things (one of the
“quick rate” button to the right). Choose one
and go at it.
5) When you want to “check in,” just search for
the thing you’re doing, and when it comes up
you can post in about the same way you’d do
a status update on Facebook.
15. Instead of meeting…
On Monday, instead of meeting, use that
time to register and spend an hour rating
things. Then you’ll have that part done.
One day (or more, if you find you like it)
over the course of the week I want you to
check in 10 times. Checking in is quick
and simple (and you can do it with a
phone if your phone runs apps).
And once you’ve done those things…
16. Only One Tumblr
On your Tumblr, in a decent sized post (2 pages
or so, if it were in MS Word), reflect on what it is
that your Glue profile says about you (and think
of how that differs from, say, what your Facebook
profile says about you).
Some things to consider:
1) Does this seem like an accurate picture?
2) Are you comfortable being seen that way
3) Would it let someone know the real you?
4) Are there things about it you wish you’d
hidden? Are there things you weren’t truthful
about because you didn’t want people to see
the honest response?
17. And that’s it.
That set of activities is all you will have
due this week. It will be due, as usual, at
11:59 pm on Sunday, November 29th.
And a due date reminder:
All of Sequence 5 is due at
2:45 pm on December 16th.
No exceptions!
18. Keep working…
I’m giving you a little less work so you have time
to work on sequence 5. Stick to those plans we
made, and if things come up, let me know if you
need help. I will be around.
And enjoy some time with your family, if you’re
going home. And if you brave it, have fun on
Black Friday.
